To test whether friendship is associated with increased similarity of real-time mental responding, researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan subjects’ brains during free viewing of naturalistic movies.
42 students participated in this study. During the fMRI study, each subject watched the same collection of video clips. The videos covered a range of topics and genres (e.g., comedy clips, documentaries, and debates).
The current results suggest that neural responses when viewing audiovisual movies are exceptionally similar among friends, and they are exceptionally similar to one another in terms of how they perceive, interpret, and react to the world around them.
These data also demonstrate that it is possible to predict whether or not two individuals are friends based only on the similarity of temporal patterns in their neural responses during free viewing of complex, real-world scenes.

“Although the results of the current study suggest that friends have exceptionally similar neural responses to naturalistic stimuli, due to this study’s cross-sectional nature, we cannot ascertain, based on these results alone, whether neural response similarity is a cause or consequence of friendship.”

She describes how, when two people are tightly bonded, they mirror each other’s behavior. Best friends’ physiology comes into synchrony too - the rhythm of their hearts, body temperature and hormonal responses. Look inside the brain and you’d see synchrony, says Machin, in the gamma waves - the higher cognitive functioning parts of the brain.

“It’s as if every sinew in your body is engaged in having a relationship with that person,” says Machin. “That for me sums up how important best friends are. We wouldn’t have evolved this way if those relationships weren’t critical for survival.”
