A fourth-grade math exam in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District went viral for its difficulty. The test was extended by 20 minutes on Thursday due to the challenging questions, leaving parents waiting outside. The exam’s heavy reading content even led some online to mistake it for a language test.

Shenzhen's Nanshan Education Bureau addressed concerns over difficult math exams, stating the goal is to develop core competencies and help students apply knowledge to real-life problems, with plans to continue aligning with curriculum reforms.
After reviewing the math exam, Huang Dongpo, a national-level teacher said, "Adding context, crossing subjects, and more reading are key parts of new exams. But it must be balanced; otherwise, it loses touch with students' real abilities and learning levels."
Education scholar Xiong Bingqi highlighted two principles for exam reform: moderate difficulty for fair assessment and a focus on subject-specific skills.
He noted two issues with Shenzhen Nanshan's fourth-grade math exam: excessive difficulty and volume, requiring a 20-minute extension, and a misaligned focus, turning math into a reading test.
