Former US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen blasted President Donald Trump's tariffs on Monday, saying the return of American manufacturing is just a "pipe dream" that may not even be a "desirable goal".

在接受美国CNBC采访时，耶伦将特朗普政府的关税政策描述为对美国经济“巨大的自残”，其目标尚不清楚，且可能无法实现。“在我看来，特朗普就像是抡着一把大锤，不仅猛敲我们的盟友，更是在爆锤美国经济。”
In an interview with CNBC television, Yellen repeated earlier comments that Trump's tariffs were a self-inflicted policy wound, and that Trump's policies were taking a "sledgehammer" to the US economy and to US alliances.
"So I really am worried about the United States becoming isolated, viewed as untrustworthy," said Yellen.
“我不明白加这些关税的理由是什么，如果是试图减少贸易逆差，那么征收关税就不会成功，关税根本就不是实现这一目标的方法。”耶伦说，“也许是为了让美国制造业回归，但我真的认为这是一个白日梦，不太可能实现。”
Yellen said the rationale for Trump's tariff policies was "unclear and not at all sensible".
"Perhaps it's to bring back American manufacturing, but I really think that's a pipe dream, and not something that is likely to be accomplished," she said, referring to Trump's efforts to bring jobs back to the United States.
"And we could even raise questions about whether or not, in a broad-based way, that's a desirable goal," she added.
