A three-day math lecture series held from Tuesday to Thursday by Professor Wang Hong, a rising star in the academic world, drew packed audiences at Peking University, with renowned mathematician Wei Dongyi seated attentively in the front row.
The lecture, centered on an infamous geometry problem known as the Kakeya conjecture, attracted graduate students from Peking University and neighboring Tsinghua University, as well as visiting scholars from around the world.

Chinese mathematical genius Wei Dongyi, an assistant professor and researcher at the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University, was seen sitting in the front row and later engaged in animated discussions with Wang during intermissions.

Born in 1990 in Shazi town, Guilin city, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Wang from a young age has displayed exceptional academic talent. She mastered first-grade material by the age of five, resulting in her being directly admitted into second grade directly and skipping the first year entirely. In 2007, at the age of 16, she was admitted to Peking University's School of Earth and Space Sciences. She later transferred to the School of Mathematical Sciences, earning her bachelor's degree in 2011.

Earlier this year, Wang proved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture. She resolved the problem — which had remained open for more than a century — alongside her colleague Joshua Zahl from the University of British Columbia.
It is considered a breakthrough that could have implications for imaging, data processing, cryptography and wireless communication.
Following the publication of their paper, prediction markets now rate Wang as a top contender for the next Fields Medal — the most prestigious award in mathematics. The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40 for exceptional achievements. To date, only two women have ever received the honor.
