A social media account claiming to belong to renowned Chinese mathematician Wei Dongyi was discovered on a popular short-video platform on Friday.
The account, under the username "韦东奕" (Wei Dongyi), contained only a single 4-second video. In the clip, Wei himself appears, stating simply, "Hello everyone, my name is Wei Dongyi. This is my account." The account's bio explicitly identified it as the "personal account of Wei Dongyi."
The impact was immediate and massive. By Saturday morning, the account had garnered over 10 million followers.
According to a report by Chengdu.cn, Wei Dongyi's cousin confirmed that it is indeed Wei's personal account, set up with assistance from family members. The cousin said that the account will be utilized in the future to share content related to mathematics, aiming to facilitate greater interaction between Wei and the public.
The comment section was quickly flooded with students and parents making wishes for exceptional performance in the ongoing national college entrance exams (gaokao), hoping for top scores and successful university placements.
In 2021, Wei Dongyi went viral online after a video showed him sending blessings to gaokao candidates. During an interview, he appeared holding a bottle of mineral water and two steamed buns—an unassuming image that stood in stark contrast to his reputation as a mathematics "genius." Since then, netizens have affectionately dubbed him "Wei Shen" (literally "God Wei").
According to the official website of Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences, Wei currently serves as a researcher at the school's Differential Equations Teaching and Research Section. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Peking University in 2014 and his PhD in 2018. From 2017 to 2019, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research. Since December 2019, he has remained at the university as an assistant professor.
