A revised version of rules for marriage registration took effect across China on May 10, and marriage registration has officially become a nationwide service. Residents are no longer required to present their hukou, or household registration documents, when applying for marriage registration and can now register at any authorized civil affairs office across the country.
In a creative response to the new policy, local civil affairs departments have begun offering on-site marriage registration services at large public events — including music festivals — by setting up temporary booths to provide real-time services for couples ready to tie the knot.
One such initiative will take place at a 2025 Strawberry Music Festival which will be held on July 12–13 in Shuimogou district in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. From 3 to 6 pm on July 13, the local marriage registration office will set up a booth, allowing couples to register their marriage on-site in a romantic festival setting.
Eligible couples must bring valid ID cards (original and copies), three recent two-inch ID photos, and other required documents.

成都、宁波等地也有先例

Last month, Ningbo in eastern Zhejiang province hosted a similar event. On June 28, the local civil affairs bureau in Xiangshan county opened a special registration window, welcoming couples from across the country to complete their paperwork and receive their wedding certificates directly at a music festival.
A similar scene played out in Chengdu, Sichuan province, during the May 17–18 Strawberry Music Festival.

"Many young people discovered our registration office through social media and came just to check in," said a spokesperson for the marriage registration office in Chengdu's Qingyang district. "Online appointments were fully booked even before the May Day holiday, and offline queues have grown several times larger. Our staff is prepared to work overtime."
"Now young couples can freely choose meaningful, experiential settings for their special moment," the spokesperson added.
