South Korean actress Im Yoon-ah's new drama Bon Appetit, Your Majesty has sparked backlash from Chinese netizens who accuse the show of distorting history and disrespecting Chinese culture.

While the producers call it "fantasy", many viewers see it as cultural disrespect and historical distortion.

People's JoyWorks, a subsidiary of People's Daily, commented that the drama "rewrites history and appropriates culture", highlighting a broader trend in some foreign shows of relying on stereotypes, distorting history, or mocking China for profit. Such practices, it said, cross the line from offense to falsifying the past under the guise of creativity.

Another South Korean drama, Tempest, starring Jun Ji-hyun, has also stirred controversy in China over lines such as "Why does China have a preference for war?" and misrepresentations of Dalian, Liaoning province, as a run-down city. These issues have prompted boycotts, with some of Jun Ji-hyun's Chinese advertising campaigns have reportedly been pulled.
Jun Ji-hyun earned about 20 billion won (roughly 100 million yuan) from endorsements in 2021, and potential cancellations could lead to significant monetary losses.
Commentators emphasized that art should balance imagination with conscience and respect, particularly in cross-cultural works. Enduring creations, they said, stem from truthfulness and genuine cultural understanding, not mockery or denigration.
