The 15th National Games witnessed a stunning performance in the men's 200m freestyle final on Wednesday, as Zhang Zhanshuo clinched the gold medal with a time of 1:44.86, breaking the national youth record.
Ji Xinjie secured the silver medal, while Pan Zhanle took home the bronze.
Sun Yang, a decorated swimmer and former champion, finished eighth in the race but was marked as DSQ (disqualified).
In a post-race interview, Sun reflected on the mishap, saying that a false start had disrupted his rhythm and affected his performance. "It had some impact, but it's alright," he said. "I'll adjust my mindset, and my next goal is to perform well in the team events for Zhejiang province."
Earlier, Sun had shared his thoughts on his long-standing career, saying, "I've been swimming for 28 years now — my swimming career is even longer than the ages of these young athletes. It's a kind of happiness, something quite magical and an incredible journey."
