Influenza cases are surging in Fukushima prefecture, Japan, reaching their highest level in nearly a decade.

An official report released Wednesday showed that 4,162 cases were reported by 48 medical institutions between Nov 17 and 23, an increase of more than 1,300 from the previous week and the eighth consecutive weekly rise — the highest level recorded since 2015.

As a result, more than 190 schools across the prefecture have suspended classes. Local authorities have urged residents to take basic preventive measures, including wearing masks when appropriate.

Data released by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on Nov 21 show that more than 140,000 influenza cases were reported nationwide in the week ending Nov 16 — about 1.7 times the previous week's total. Twenty-four of Japan's 47 prefectures have reached the official flu alert level.

During the same period, sentinel medical institutions reported an average of 37.73 cases each, marking the 13th consecutive week of rising infections. Under Japan's standards, an average above one case signals flu season, while more than 30 triggers an official alert.

A Japanese internal medicine physician said this year's influenza wave has intensified more rapidly than usual and may carry a higher risk of severe illness beyond typical flu symptoms. As case numbers rise, clinics and hospitals are struggling to manage both routine outpatient and emergency visits.

While antiviral medications remain adequately supplied, ongoing shortages of common cold medicines and antibiotics are adding to the strain. With year-end holidays approaching and temporary closures expected, access to healthcare could come under further pressure.
