An individual has shared on social media that she managed to take a train, although she had forgotten to bring her ID card with her. She shared that the process is straightforward and took her only one minute.
In another case, another individual shared that she was taking her nephew back to her hometown when she realized that her nephew had yet to apply for a citizenship ID card. She thought she needed to apply one for him at the police station and worried they would miss the train.
However, when she asked staff at the train station, they asked her if she knows her nephew's household registration book number (Hukou), which she did, and after about 5 minutes, her nephew was issued a temporary ticket and they managed to take the train.
Staff at the train station responded to inquiries that forgetting the ID card would not interfere with one's trip, but not knowing the procedures to get a temporary one would. So what to do when you forget to bring your ID card at the train station?
There are two main methods one can use and take the train in case they forgot to bring their ID cards to the train station.
1. 12306 App's Digital ID Card
If you have registered with 12306 APP, then you will be able to use the APP to generate a Digital ID Card (if you haven't yet done so) on your mobile phone and use it to buy a ticket and take the train.
2. Temporary Passenger Identification Certificate
Self-service machines in most train stations are capable of generating a temporary ID for passengers who forget to bring their ID card. It takes 1 minute to get one at no charges.
Apart from self-service machines, one can also go to the ticket window and ask staff for a temporary passenger ID certificate. This is better suitable for those who can't use self-service machines and mobile phones, or when the self-service machines have malfunctioned.
Beware that all the methods above applies to people who have valid ID cards, and only minors can use their guardian information if they have not yet been issued with an ID card.
The applicant's information will also be verified before the certificates are issued.
The Digital ID Card is valid for as long as your physical ID Card is, but Temporary Passenger ID Cards are only valid for 24 hours.
Can I Use a Screenshot of My Digital ID Card?
No! The Digital ID Card is dynamically generated by the 12306 App in real time, so the screenshot taken prior to usage will be invalid.
Can I Use a Digital ID Card Saved in 3rd Party Apps?
3rd party apps, such as Ctrip, can have your digital ID saved, but when taking a train, it will be invalid and not recognized. One can only use the digital ID card from the 12306 official app.
Can I Use the Temporary Passenger ID Card Repeatedly on the Same Day?
No! The Temporary Passenger ID Card can only be used for the trip one applied for at the station within 24 hours. If the passenger wants to take another trip on the same day, then they need to apply for another one.
