TGIF! Happy Friday people! Finally, we get to do this awful weather justice and sleep in on a rainy day. This weekend is the lazy withdrawal following last week’s action packed Avengers, MayPac, NBA Playoffs Game 7 super-duper-entertainment-extravaganza! This weekend is the calm after the storm.. a Netflix in bed kind of weekend. Or should I say.. an HBO NOW in bed type of weekend.
That’s right! HBO NOW, the new kid on the block, born and bred to take on streaming giant Netflix, has been out for almost a month. HBO’s new streaming service provides users instant access to select premier blockbuster movies along with the latest episodes of HBO originals such as Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. Some other awesome movies currently available on HBO now include the new Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, 300: Rise of an Empire among many others.
The app is free to download and comes with a one month free trial, after which will cost $14.99 per month. The price is a little costly (likely due to Apple’s cut.. which I’m guessing is a large percentage given how hard Apple’s been promoting the service) but there’s really no risk to give the service a try since HBO is giving users an entire month of free streaming movies plus real-time access to the latest episodes of Game of Thrones season 5.
With this new HBO NOW app, HBO is looking to beat Netflix in its own game. The app itself looks streamlined for mobile users and while there are still some bugs, its a commendable first version of what is destined to be one of the key products integral to HBO’s survival in the cutthroat content streaming game.
HBO is finally starting to get what users want in this day and age and what they’re actually willing to pay for. In the piracy rampant seemingly lawless internet age we live in today, companies like HBO with business models heavily driven by exclusive content are slowly realizing the path they're going down is leading towards a cliff… and just like any other company fighting to stay relevant, the only way to survive is to innovate and evolve with the times. HBO seems to have realized this undeniable truth... it all comes down to three simple words…
