THE Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce says it has processed five million trade declarations since introducing paper-to-electronic conversion services at its seven certification branches in 1999.
The chamber's certification director CC Chan said many SMEs are short of staff and because they only make a few applications every month, they believe training staff to efficiently make trade declarations is not necessary.
Due to the complicated procedures, he said companies that process their own import/export declarations often make mistakes with commodity codes due to their inexperience, resulting in several rounds of corrections, which can be time-consuming and costly.
"Consequently, many SMEs prefer to use the Chamber's services which eliminate cumbersome application procedures and also frees up SMEs' staff to focus on other work," Mr Chan said.
"We deliver efficient and professional verification and trade declaration services, which save companies the trouble and expense of making corrections."
To help SMEs' business development, the chamber provides a wide range of business services including trade declarations, Certificate of Origin (CO), certification of documents, ATA Carnet, and Consulate Endorsement Facilitation (CEF). Many of these services are available online.
