FUJIAN Provincial Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone (PCPZ)'s administrative committee revealed recently that Pingtan customs checkpoint has gained approval of opening up from the State Council, reports Xinhua.
Also the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone are allowed to set up frontier inspection agencies such as maritime affairs, customs and Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine service.
The opening scope for the checkpoint includes two areas, south and north, comprising the Jinjing port area and the Aoqian port area.
The Jinjing port area is equipped with a 21.5-kilometre quay and nine sophisticated berths capable of handling 10,000-tonne ships. Three of the berths can deal with both passenger and cargo services, while the other six berths are designed to offer multi-use cargo handling.
Also, the Aoqian port area incorporates a 9.2-kilometre quay and one 10,000-tonne passenger, cargo and ro-ro berth.
Fujian government launched its first Pingtan to Taichung service in November 2011, deploying a high-speed passenger ship named Haixia, which has commenced its seaborne service from Pingtan to Taipei since last October.
This year, the Fujian authority plans to open new services connecting Pingtan and Taiwan by taking Pingtan and Xiamen as pilot cities. It is expected that Taiwan's vehicles can be shipped to Fujian in 2014. Also, Taiwan's terminal in Pingtan port area is scheduled to put into operation in 2015 with new freight services.
