THE first feeder service between Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) in Goa and Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) will commence later this month, reports the Times of India.
Built at the Chowgule Group's shipyard in Loutolim, the new 106-TEU feeder, and will move between the two ports four to six times a month, depending on demand.
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) chairman Kirit Maganlal said feeder would reduce container traffic on the congested roads.
"The service will target export and import companies in Goa, and will benefit booming pharmaceutical exports now transported in refrigerated containers to JNPT, 800 kilometres away by road," said Mr Maganlal.
Shreyas Shipping and Logistics CEO VK Singh said his feeder service would boost container trade at Goa's MPT, reduce costs and offer increased cargo safety.
The service is also expected to appeal to pharma companies that ship exports to Colombo from where they are transshipped to Europe and America.
Mr Maganlal said Goa had the potential to become an important logistics hub that can cater to industries in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and can look beyond shipping to take on warehousing and other value-added tasks.
