AI for Community Renewal: A Human-Computer Interactive Digital Platform for Urban Community Planning

As generative AI rapidly reshapes our understanding of the urban world from mobility optimization and environmental monitoring to plans and design automation new interdisciplinary frameworks are urgently needed. Building on the success of the 2024 event, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University will initiate and host the second AI4CITIES Conference and the inaugural AI4CITIES International Summer Workshop in July 2025, in collaboration with the International Association for China Planning (IACP) and the World Urban Planning Education Network (WUPEN), and in partnership with a wide network of universities and institutions from around the world.

The AI4CITIES Summer Workshop is the first global program to focus specifically on the integration of Artificial Intelligence for Cities. It fosters problem-driven, cross-disciplinary collaboration and encourages the use of AI as a tool for exploring “more explainable, collaborative, and sustainable” urban futures. We warmly invite outstanding scholars, senior undergraduate students, master’s students, PhD. candidates, as well as early-career researchers, from both AI-related and city-focused disciplines to join us in Shanghai for this summer initiative.

Description

As China's urban development transitions into the renewal phase, a large number of communities face micro-regeneration demands such as facility supplementation and environmental enhancement. Community renewal encounters complex conditions during renewal, including pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, limited space, and diverse needs, often exceeding the scope of individual planners' expertise. Establishing a human-computer interactive community renewal planning support platform—leveraging image-based AI to diagnose existing issues, employing physical models to facilitate more accessible community engagement, and presenting quantitative evaluation results in real time to planners and stakeholders—can effectively support community planning decision-making.

This topic will introduce and discuss how to integrate various intelligent technologies with the needs of community regeneration planning to realize a digital platform for human-computer interactive community renewal. The instructor team will guide participants to learn the concepts and theories of planning support systems, teach AI-based spatial evaluation of existing communities using image analysis, and develop a prototype of a digital community micro-regeneration platform by integrating diverse digital and intelligent technologies. By addressing the practical renewal needs of Tongji Xincun, participants will apply the acquired theories and technologies to explore the potential of new technical methods in community micro-regeneration projects.

Through this workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of AI applications in planning, particularly the complexities of urban renewal projects. They will learn how to incorporate AI technologies into the public participation process of design and acquire practical skills for employing advanced AI tools to assist in participatory planning.
