讲座预告｜Alexander Lvov：The Concept of Worldview

The concept of worldview (or Weltanschauung) is one of the most widespread within the field of Humanities. Being German by origin, this concept had become an essential term for such research areas as political and cultural studies, theology, linguistics, pedagogy and philosophy. Each modern language uses this word as a calque form German, sometimes it appears as a full synonym to ideology or picture of the world. This is the first aspect of my lecture: I will trace back the history of the concept of Weltanschauung and demonstrate the limits of its extension. I will discuss, why German idealists found it important and how the interpretations of ideology in young Marx’s writings influenced its modern understanding.

The second aspect of my lecture is to demonstrate the interest to the elaboration and development of the concept of worldview in the writings of Russian and German philosophers at the edge of the 19th-20th centuries. I will compare the attitude of such philosophers as Wilhelm Dilthey, Heinrich Gomperz, Max Scheler, Vasily Rozanov, Leo Shestov and some others to the possible typologies of worldview and its importance for realization and interpretation of contemporary to them political and philosophical realms.
