西湖文化课程激发学生创意，现代与传统完美结合

In 2024, TianBridge International in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, introduced a hands-on course on West Lake. Held after the June-July final exams, the course gives students a chance to use their creativity.
The idea behind the course is to promote West Lake culture and help students gain a deeper understanding of it. Working with a team of committed teachers, students spend three days bringing their pre-planned projects to life.
In its first edition last year, the program encouraged students to use AI to design cultural products inspired by West Lake. Drawing on their impressions of the landmark, they created items such as oil-paper umbrellas and phone cases. “One of our students even designed a hand-drawn style keyboard sticker featuring elements like the Jixian Pavilion, the nine-turn bridge and lotus flowers,” said Xie Huiping, the school’s deputy principal.
This year, students took their creativity a step further by directing a short film based on the classic story Legend of the White Snake. In their version, Bai Suzhen travels to modern-day Hangzhou, sees the effects of environmental pollution and joins a livestream (直播) to call on people to protect West Lake.
“West Lake is unique to us … Let us, amid the bustle (喧嚣), rediscover our respect and love for its heritage,” students reflected at the end of the film. By mixing modern concerns with traditional characters, they demonstrated both creativity and care for West Lake.
“Next year, we plan to encourage students to tailor travel plans for tourist groups along West Lake,” Xie said, “to make the courses even more practical and enjoyable.”
