Day One
Packed with enthusiasm, excitement, and plenty of snacks, our Grade 6 to 8 students set out on our culture trip from Wednesday, November 12th to Friday, November 14th. Our first stop was for authentic Changzhou cuisine, where we feasted on a range of local dishes from sesame cake to silver thread noodles. Once our bodies were fueled, it was time to nourish our minds and get our hands a little dirty.
Our journey took us to the Canal Five Creative Block, where students were introduced to the past, present, and future of Changzhou through the Architectural Museum. We then let our creativity flow with an engaging activity called Filigree-Style Enamel. Students decorated bookmarks using a simplified version of the traditional process, in which aluminum wire is shaped into an image, filled with colored sandy pigment, and then sealed with a clear varnish.
After indulging in another locally prepared feast, we headed to the hotel to rest up for Day 2.
Day Two
Day 2 began with a personalized experience exploring the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Changzhou, as we learned about the history, prestige, and symbolic meaning of Changzhou combs. Although the craft has been in decline due to modernization, students were able to watch master craftsmen create combs in the traditional style and even personalize their own, bringing home another precious memento from the trip.
Following lunch, we visited Yancheng Spring and Autumn Paradise, where we explored the park’s showcase of the “Hundred Schools of Thought” and attended a lesson on Traditional Chinese Etiquette, focusing on appropriate greetings for different members of society. We wrapped up the afternoon by exploring the park with our peers.
Day Three
After two days filled with learning, creativity, and culinary delights, it was time for students to socialize, strengthen friendships, and enjoy a little thrill-seeking. This brought us to the China Dinosaur Amusement Park, nationally renowned for its unique theme, exhilarating rides, and spectacular shows. Five hours later, we returned to the bus with many tired, but very happy, students.
But one more special moment awaited us. As we approached the city, night fell over Shanghai and the skyline lit up around us, creating a quiet and beautiful moment to mark the end of an unforgettable experience.
