《南京照相馆》口碑爆棚！英文名为何是Dead to Rights ？

Set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and drawing from documented historical events, “Dead to Rights” follows A Chang (Liu Haoran of the “Detective Chinatown” franchise), a postman who assumes the identity of a photo developer to survive the Japanese occupation. Operating from within the walls of a Japanese-controlled studio, he covertly shelters Chinese soldiers and civilians in an act of quiet resistance.

《南京照相馆》以1937年南京大屠杀为历史背景，取材自真实事件，讲述了一位名叫阿昌（由《唐人街探案》系列主演刘昊然饰演）的邮差，在日军占领南京之际，为求一线生机，冒充照相馆冲洗工。在这家被日军控制的照相馆内，他暗中掩护中国士兵与无辜百姓，展开一场无声的抵抗。

首先回答：不是。

美国知名报刊综艺《Variety》也已经发文，标题为：Nanjing Massacre Drama ‘Dead to Rights’ Sets North American Bow，翻译成中文是：聚焦南京大屠杀的剧情片《南京照相馆》将登陆北美首映。

电影的英文名没有直译为Nanjing Photo Studio，而是翻译成：Dead to Rights。“Dead” 这里不是指“死亡”，而是强调确凿、彻底、完全的意思；“to rights” 则指“按照正当程序、事实清楚”。合起来就是：铁证如山，罪证确凿，无法抵赖。

导演申奥在采访中还补充道，想用这个英文词组，表达一种向死而生、矢志不渝的情绪。

Sets North American Bow：意为“将在北美首映”，其中 bow 是电影行业用语，指“首映”或“首次登场”。

“dead to rights”也是美式俚语，意思和 “red-handed”（当场被抓）接近，指的是“铁证如山、无从抵赖”。

《韦氏大词典》给出的解释是：

dead to rights: with no chance of escape or excuse; red-handed

查词典不难理解这个词组的意思，但为了更好地解答读者提问，需要溯其本源：dead + to rights。

其实，如果在片名前补上一个词，或许更清晰，比如 “Captured Dead to Rights”。“capture” 既可以表示“拍照”，也可以引申为“记录、留存”，与“照相馆”的意象契合。

虽然这个短语里的 “dead” 与“死亡”无关，但片方选用这个俚语做英文片名，显然是有意借其字面，引发观众对死亡与正义的联想，呼应影片关于记录侵华日军暴行的主题。

英式俚语中常用“bang to rights”，“bang”是拟声词，此处也表达“恰好（exactly）”之意。《经济学人》曾在报道中妙用拟声词：
