Deep in the Yangtze River Delta, one of China's most prosperous economic regions, the country is focusing on a approximately 3-square-kilometer island located in the municipality of Wuhu. According to the Financial Times, this agricultural land will soon be planned to host some of the region's largest servers dedicated to serving wealthy areas nearby, which will represent one part of the plan to build the "Stargate of China," as described by an executive tied to one of the project's suppliers.

The aforementioned farmland will be converted into a "data island" housing massive data centers for multiple companies including Huawei, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom. These servers are strategically placed near major cities like Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Nanjing—all of which will benefit from this upgrade that aims to speed up AI inference for residents in the area, such as delivering faster responses in agentic AI applications.

The Wuhu data center cluster's dedicated fiber optic network delivers latency of just 10ms to six provinces and one municipality in East China, covering over 20 hotspot cities across the region. Specifically, it achieves 5ms latency to Shanghai and Hangzhou, and 2ms to Nanjing. These network performances demonstrate the initial effectiveness of the Wuhu data center cluster's development.

In February 2022, with the launch of China's national "East Data West Computing" project, the Wuhu Data Center Cluster was approved for construction. It has since become one of the country's ten major data center clusters, one of the two key data clusters in the Yangtze River Delta computing power hub, and serves as a critical channel connecting eastern and western computing hubs.

Though covering just 200 square meters and appearing compact beside an adjacent 15-story building, this facility serves as the true "brain" of the entire center. The director of the center explained that the core system employs advanced immersion phase-change liquid cooling technology, delivering AI computing power of no less than 160 petaflops.

Data centers led by industry giants such as Huawei Cloud, China Unicom, and China Telecom have successively commenced operations or broken ground, offering scalable capacity ranging from tens of thousands to over 80,000 standard racks. These facilities are designed to deliver low-latency computing networks and high-performance computational power, supporting mid-to-low latency demands across industries like finance, AI, and biopharmaceuticals in the Yangtze River Delta and central China regions. Backed by targeted policy support, Wuhu is intensifying efforts to establish itself as a national-level computing power hub, having already attracted 15 key projects with a cumulative investment exceeding 270 billion yuan.
