Shenyang Chapter Established
On 16th May, European Commissioner for Regional Policy Danuta Hübner officially launched the Shenyang Chapter of the European Chamber during her visit to China on invitation from the National Reform and Development Commission (NDRC). Shenyang Vice Mayor Song Qi attended the new office opening.
The official launch represented a milestone for the future development of the local office, thanks to the agreement between EUNA (the existing European and North America Business Association) and the European Chamber, which decided to join forces in Shenyang.

Pearl River Delta Chapter Established

On 5th June, European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and European Union Ambassador to China Serge Abou officially launched the European Chamber’s Pearl River Delta Chapter (later renamed to South China Chapter) in Guangzhou.

European Chamber President Janssens de Varebeke said in his opening speech:
The opening of the Pearl River Delta Chapter shows that the Chamber is extremely committed to enhance dialogue and to improve the business environment also at a local level.
The cluster-based economical system formed by Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan and Zhuhai truly represents the biggest and most concrete example of China's economic reform, and European companies are among the main supporters of this achievement.

1,000 Members
On 1st September, the 1000th member joined the Chamber.

Position Paper Presented to Chinese Vice Premier and European Commission Vice President
On 7th September, a delegation of members attended the annual Symposium for Multinational Corporations 2006, chaired by Vice Premier Madame Wu Yi and organised by the Ministry of Commerce. The Chamber took the opportunity to present a copy of the Position Paper 2006/2007 to Madam Wu and Vice Minister of Commerce Madam Ma Xiuhong.
On 12th September, European Commission Vice President Günter Verheugen accepted and endorsed the Position Paper on behalf of the European Commission during the EU-China Business Summit in Helsinki.

European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy visited Beijing and Shanghai. Commissioner McCreevy had talks with Chinese government officials and met with Chamber members in Shanghai to discuss the Chinese financial sector and the hurdles that European financial services providers face in China.

Members of the European Chamber's Advisory Council and Executive Committee had lunch with European Trade Commission Peter Mandelson in Beijing. This provided the opportunity for the Trade Commissioner to inform the Chamber about his meetings with his Chinese counterparts, as well as members to brief the Trade Commissioner on problems faced by European companies doing business in China.
