A bizarre attempted robbery at a gold shop in Shanghai’s Pudong District drew crowds of onlookers but ended swiftly with police intervention.
According to a police statement released on October 26, at around 10:55 am, Pudong police received a report that a man was smashing display counters inside a jewelry store on Kangshen Road in Zhoupu Town.
Officers rushed to the scene and, with help from store security, arrested the suspect — a 37-year-old man surnamed Cao.
Police confirmed that no one was injured and no jewelry was stolen or damaged. Cao has been placed under criminal detention, and the case is under further investigation.
Earlier videos shared online showed the suspect holding an object in one hand and a bag in the other, while several bystanders gathered outside the “China Gold” shop watching the incident unfold.
What initially appeared to be a dramatic gold shop heist turned out to be a failed solo attempt, quickly contained by security and police within minutes.
