New Era of Short Vertical Films

As the star mentor team of this pilot workshop, Dalynn Studio's founder Mary Lynn and her partner, Marta led the way. Mary Lynn, a visionary director and marketing expert from Uruguay, and Marta, a seasoned screenwriter and film lawyer from Spain, brought years of cross-border experience to the program. Their deep understanding of industry pain points drove them to meticulously craft a curriculum and course materials. Together, their combined expertise ensures students learn every aspect of the industry—from the art of storytelling to the business of production.

The incredible diversity of the first cohort of talents so inspired us. Students from different cities and backgrounds came together with a shared goal: to take the first step into the global market. We were honored to have talents like Shamim, an Iranian student of dentistry who took a three-hour flight to be there, and Darren Borrowman, a seasoned filmmaker and professor, Head of the Film Production Department, and Producing Instructor at a prominent Film School in Shanghai, who immersed himself in the on-set practice. The group also included inspiring Chinese talents like Chen Shu, the "vibe maker" who used his bilingual skills to put foreign students at ease, and Zeng Chen, an actress with years of practical experience in the vertical short drama industry, who candidly shared her insights into the industry's need for clearer standards. Even Jiangheng Guo, with his rich background in Japanese stage drama, found a new perspective on the collaborative nature of filmmaking. These unique perspectives, combined with a collective passion for the industry, created a vibrant and dynamic learning environment.

HISDA，全名为Hengdian International Short Drama Alliance，即横店国际短剧联盟。由横店影视城发起，七家初创单位联合组建，霸榜全美甚至全球的顶流短剧平台Shortmax与Dreameshort，一线爆款制作公司SpringReel与玩悟文化，实力雄厚的版权方华瑜国际，以及文海出海的顶流骑兵，中国网络作家村。

HISDA, short for Hengdian International Short Drama Alliance, was initiated by Hengdian World Studios and co-founded by seven founding leading companies. Its members include top global short drama platforms Shortmax and Dreameshort (which dominate rankings in the US and beyond), first-tier hit production companies SpringReel and WOWORLD, powerful copyright holder UniVerse, and China Internet Writers Village—a key force in literary and cultural exports.

自 2024 年首次会谈以来，HISDA 联盟一直密切关注着国际短剧市场。尽管行业经历了迅猛发展，但也面临着诸多挑战，例如行业规范不明确、信息不透明以及从业者权益难以保障等问题。

为了解决这些痛点，HISDA 国际影视英才工作坊应运而生。该工作坊旨在打造一个全链路的人才培养路径，以横店为基地，向世界各地输送先进经验和优秀人才。通过本次工作坊，HISDA 为每一位参与者种下了“全球共创，五年护航”的承诺，致力于引导他们在蓬勃发展的新行业中乘风破浪。

Since its first meeting in 2024, the HISDA alliance has closely monitored the global short drama market. While the industry experienced a rapid surge, it also faced challenges such as unclear regulations, a lack of transparency, and difficulties in protecting the rights of professionals. 

To address these pain points, HISDA's International Film & Television Talent Workshop was established. The program aims to create a comprehensive talent-training path, serving as a hub in Hengdian to export advanced experience and outstanding talent worldwide. Through this workshop, HISDA plants a seed of "global co-creation and five-year support" for every participant, promising to guide them in navigating this new, dynamic industry.

The program was meticulously designed to be both profound and practical. Our very own Marta, a film lawyer and screenwriter, offered a masterclass that perfectly embodied this dual approach. She guided students through two distinct, yet interconnected, lessons that are essential for success in the modern industry.

Marta 向学员们传授了国际制作中至关重要的法律知识。她通过解析国际短剧合作的法律框架和核心条款，让每一位学员都对全球制作的商业层面有了更清晰的认知，从而能够自信地踏入国际市场。她的课程有力地提醒我们，一个健康、有活力的行业，正是建立在清晰的法律基础和对所有合作者的尊重之上。

Marta equipped students with the vital legal knowledge needed for international productions. By demystifying the legal framework and core clauses for international cooperation in short dramas, she empowered participants to step into the global market with confidence and a clear understanding of the business side of filmmaking. Her lesson was a powerful reminder that an ethical, healthy industry is built on a foundation of legal clarity and respect for all collaborators.

Masterclass 2: The Art of Storytelling

作为一名资深编剧，Marta 引导学员深入探究跨文化叙事，分析如何调整剧本以在全球观众中引起共鸣。课程重点在于动手实践：参与者在剧本阐释和本地化的片场实训中，将所学知识付诸实践。在此过程中，学员们通力协作，共同将一个故事变为现实。本次课程，包括 Shamim 和 Darren 教授在内的所有学员，都亲身体验了在跨文化环境中取得成功所必需的协作精神，证明了理解自己的权利和作为合作者的角色，才是创作出有影响力、跨越界限的作品的关键。

Marta as a seasoned screenwriter, she guided students through a deep dive into cross-cultural storytelling, analyzing how to adapt scripts to resonate with a global audience. The focus was on hands-on application: participants put their newfound knowledge to the test in a practical on-set training in script interpretation and localization. Here, the students collaborated to bring a story to life. This session, which included students like Shamim and Professor Darren, highlighted the collaborative spirit necessary for success in a cross-border environment, proving that understanding one's rights and role as a collaborator is the key to creating impactful, boundary-pushing art.

As a visionary director and marketing expert, Mary Lynn's masterclass was designed to push students beyond their comfort zones. She led two high-impact sessions that taught participants how to embrace pressure and turn it into professional growth.

Masterclass 1: Vertical Visions and Extreme Practice

对许多人来说，工作坊最精彩的部分莫过于 Mary Lynn 的极限实践课。在短短 120 分钟内，两组学员必须从零开始，策划、拍摄并剪辑完成一部时长 90 秒的竖屏短剧。这项高强度挑战，紧随竖屏构图和灯光技巧的基础课程之后，证明了它是激发创造力的强大工具。在横店酷热的烈日下，学员们的潜能被推向了极限。A 组以“发现”为主题，创作了一部结局令人惊叹的古风短片。B 组则面对高难度的侦探故事挑战，不知疲倦地讲述了一个惊心动魄的故事。这次练习证明，压力可以是朋友，这些年轻电影人的潜力远超他们的想象。

For many, the highlight of the workshop was Mary Lynn's extreme practice class. In just 120 minutes, two groups had to develop, shoot, and edit a complete 90 seocnd episode pf short vertical drama from scratch. This intensive exercise, which followed a session on the fundamentals of vertical composition and lighting, proved to be a powerful tool for creativity. Under the scorching Hengdian sun, participants were pushed to their limits. Group A, with the theme of "discovery," created a stunning ancient-style film with a shocking twist ending. Group B, facing the challenge of a high-stakes detective story, worked tirelessly to tell a thrilling tale. This exercise proved that pressure can be a powerful tool and that the potential of these young filmmakers is far greater than they can imagine.

By putting them through a high-stakes, fast-paced challenge, Mary Lynn empowered them to not only create under pressure but also to develop a resilient mindset essential for long-term success in the industry.
