The Drewry World Container Index (WCI) reached US$1,687/FEU last week, which was a rebound of 2% after 17 weeks decreasing. The rebound showed the symbol of stabilization of the market which is facing reducing demand and oversupply on major East-West routes.

According to Drewry, spot fares on both routes from Shanghai to Los Angeles and New York rose 1%, however, the consultancy indicated that it’s just a short-term increase, as overcapacity and seasonality could weaken the General Rate Increases (GRI) implemented during mid-October. Meanwhile, Xeneta indicated that the environment is still not very positive compared to pre-Red Sea crisis levels, since average rates from the Far East to the US West Coast and East Coast were US$1,653/FEU and US$2,588/FEU.

Freightos analysts added that ocean freight rates “have fallen to their lowest levels since before the Red Sea crisis”, while rates on the Transpacific route fell another 8% weeks ago because of lower import volumes to the US and capacity supply growth.

In order to handle this, shipping lines plan new GRIs on Asia-Europe and Asia-North America services in November and cutting capacity through blank sailings. Drewry estimates that 90 itineraries cancelled in October would lead to a monthly capacity reduction of 6% on the main East-West routes. From week 43 to 47 (from 20 October to 23 November), 51 scheduled departures (7% of the total) have been cancelled, among which 49% on the transpacific eastbound, 33% on the Asia-Europe/Med and 18% on the transatlantic westbound.
Drewry also said that new port charges between the US and China and episodes of labor disputes in European ports added new uncertainties and complexities to operational management, however, the impact on effective supply remains limited.

Under this situation, it is recommended that secure space in advance, diversify routes and maintain communication with operators, since instability could strengthen around November.
