On October 8, 2025, Health Canada published a document proposing to approve the use of structured medium- and long-chain triacylglycerol (MLCT) in foods.
In 2024, Health Canada received a submission seeking permission to market medium- and long-chain triacylglycerol (MLCT) oil as a food ingredient in Canada. MLCT oil is produced through enzymatic esterification. To determine whether this ingredient could be sold as food in Canada, Health Canada scientists with expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, toxicology, chemistry, and nutrition conducted a thorough analysis of the data and protocols provided by the applicant to ensure the validity of the findings.
To confirm the product's safety for consumption, scientists evaluated how the product is manufactured, its composition, potential toxicity or allergenicity, and its dietary exposure within the Canadian population. Following the assessment, it was determined that the use of MLCT oil as a food ingredient poses no nutritional, chemical, microbiological, or toxicological risks. Health Canada’s evaluation of MLCT oil was conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for the Safety Assessment of Novel Foods.
