Think back to your own school days - perhaps a science experiment in Year 10, a field trip in Year 3, or a camp in Year 7, why is it that we remember some experiences and not others? Why do some lessons stand out in our memories well into old age, whereas others, while valuable in content and knowledge, do not?
Most often, it is the experiences we remember - moments when we were active participants, not just observers. Whether it was the thrill of discovery, the challenge of a steep hike in the rain, or even simply the joy of collaborating with friends, these are the lessons that endure. This is what we call experiential learning: learning by doing.
According to the Association for Experiential Education, Experiential Education is:
a teaching philosophy…in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, clarify values, and develop people's capacity to contribute to their communities.
At Dulwich Puxi, experiential education is an integral part of the curriculum. Our Senior School Challenge Week and Junior School Residential Trip are strong examples of experiential education in action. Last week, our Senior School Challenge Week and Junior School Residential Trips offered students the chance to step beyond the classroom, to test themselves, and to truly Live Worldwise.
Year 7 travelled to Yunnan, partnering with Elevated Honey to explore sustainable beekeeping and minority culture.
Years 8 and 9 journeyed to Quzhou to learn history and heritage.
Years 10 and 12 engaged in service-learning projects in Guizhou, working side by side with local communities.
Meanwhile, some students extended their horizons in Singapore, broadening their perspectives through international experiences.
Each journey challenged students to adapt, collaborate, and reflect, building the kind of resilience and empathy that will serve them for life.
Our Years 4 - 6 students embarked on residential trips designed to foster independence and critical 21st-century skills. Away from home, they faced new challenges, solved problems together, and returned with stronger friendships and growing confidence in their abilities.
Year 4 students challenged themselves on the adventure tower, engaged in collaborative raft building, experienced overnight camping, and visited the local zoo. These activities built remarkable resilience and problem-solving skills.
Year 5 enjoyed scenic bike rides through wetlands, explored sustainability themes connected to the Global Goals, conquered the cargo net challenge, and also visited the zoo, deepening their environmental awareness.
Year 6 students navigated kayaking adventures, tackled rope challenges, cycled through diverse terrains, and learned about beekeeping at the local apiary. These experiences enhanced their understanding of ecosystems and environmental stewardship.
Why It Matters?
These experiences are more than just trips. They create lasting memories and real learning, shaping young people who are curious, resilient, and ready to make a difference.
Moreover, these experiences extend far beyond Challenge Week. We provide our students with many global opportunities to learn on the world stage. This year, we launched our Live Worldwise Campus campaign, which offers Year 7 - 9 students sponsored learning programmes in Switzerland and the UK.
