How to Avoid Getting Sick While Traveling Abroad

Getting sick in another country can ruin your trip and can sometimes cost a lot of money. Here are some useful tips to help you stay healthy when traveling abroad.

Before You Leave

Visit a travel doctor to get advice about the health risks where you are going. They can also give you vaccines and other medicines to lower your chances of getting sick. Getting enough sleep before you leave will also help with this.

Make sure to get travel insurance, so if you do get sick, it won't cost you as much to see a doctor or fly home early if you need to.

Travelling There and Back

It's always a good idea to wash your hands often, but that's especially true while on a plane, train, bus, or boat! If you can, try to sit somewhere with the fewest people, as studies show that sitting within a meter of a sick person makes you far more likely to catch what they have.

While You're There

Depending on where you're visiting, it can be a good idea to avoid drinking tap water or having ice in your drinks. If you don't want to buy bottled water, get a water bottle with a built-in filter to make the water safe to drink.

Be very careful around all animals as bites can cause serious diseases, such as rabies. Mosquitoes can also spread disease, so use a mosquito net and insect repellent if mosquitoes are common where you're going.
