Baby boomers are Americans born between 1946 and 1964, during a big post-World War II birth surge.

About 76 million were born, making this generation much larger than the one before.

The boom was partly due to returning soldiers, economic growth, higher marriage rates, and fewer immigrant births at the time.

As boomers grew, the U.S. had to adapt—building schools, targeting businesses to teenagers, and expanding colleges.

They shaped culture with rock ‘n’ roll, television, and movies, and influenced politics through protests, the draft, and eventually holding major offices, including the presidency.

In the 1980s, boomers dominated business, culture, and politics, founding companies like Apple and Microsoft, and defining music, TV, and movies.

Their scale forced institutions to adjust to their needs.

As they retired starting around 2010, younger generations—millennials and Gen Z—began to take a larger role in society, sometimes clashing culturally (“OK boomer”) and politically.

By 2023, boomers were only a fifth of the U.S. population, projected to shrink to a tenth by 2041.

Despite their decline in numbers, the effects of the baby boom on culture, politics, and the economy will last for decades.
