In 2020, there was a story in the news about a 1-year-old child who had accidentally ordered some onions online.
The little girl had been given her dad's phone to play with. She bought a pack of three onions and had them sent to her house.
Because of the cost of delivery, those three onions cost the man about $26.
And according to a new survey, 31% of parents say their child has bought something online without permission. And many of them have spent a lot more than $26!
In fact, the average amount that children had spent was $170! Almost 20% of parents said their child had spent more than $300.
Talker Research spoke to 2,000 US parents of children aged 18 and under who live at home.
According to the survey, they bought things like video games and clothes, as well as smartphones, watches and computers.
Some parents even said their children had invested in cryptocurrency. But this was likely done by teenagers and not 1-year-olds!
The problem, according to experts, is not only that parents are not checking what their children are doing online. Parents are also not teaching children about managing money.
And many US children have a lot of money. The survey found that, on average, under-18s get an allowance of $119 per month.
That's enough to buy a lot of onions!
