Chinese Saying

A wife in Changsha, Hunan province, took a bold step to publicly express her frustration by displaying red banners on the fence of a residential complex, sarcastically thanking her best friend for having an affair with her husband.

Alongside the banners were pennants revealing that the best friend, surnamed Shi, works in the finance department of a tourism management office in the Hongshan community.

One banner read: “Shi violates public order and morals by having an affair with her best friend’s husband,” with the attribution: “Wife.”

It’s unclear whether this was the neighborhood where Shi resides or if the banners were directed at her home.

Additional red pennants were found on a car within the compound, though it’s uncertain if the vehicle belonged to Shi. One of the pennants declared: “Shi has been my best friend for 12 years and has provided XX services to my husband for five years.” Another read: “Shi went to hotels with her best friend’s husband during office hours.”

A staff member from the tourism management office confirmed that someone named Shi is employed there, and an investigation is underway.

The banners were quickly removed after the incident, but the identities of the wife and her husband remain undisclosed.

Legal experts weighed in on the matter. Lawyer Zhao Liangshan pointed out that such public displays could infringe upon Shi’s privacy, reputation, and personality rights, especially if they contain false or defamatory statements.

Additionally, if the banners caused a disturbance or obstructed public spaces, they could violate the Public Security Administration Punishment Law, potentially leading to a fine of up to 200 yuan (US$28). In more severe cases, individuals who hang such banners could face detention for up to 19 days and fines of up to 500 yuan (US$70).

In 2023, a man was detained for 10 days for posting a banner mocking his ex-girlfriend for "two-timing" another man.

Legal experts advise those whose rights are violated to seek resolution through legal channels.

Online reactions to the incident were divided. One observer commented, “It’s illegal, but I support the wife’s revenge.” Another speculated, “Shi must be facing serious consequences at her workplace.” A third person quipped, “How is the wife insulting her best friend? She’s just expressing gratitude.”

In Chinese tradition, red pennants are usually given as a sincere token of appreciation.
