Dubnium (symbol Db, atomic number 105) is a synthetic, radioactive transition metal belonging to Group 5 (VB) of the periodic table. Discovered in 1968 by researchers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia, it was named in 1997 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to honor its birthplace.


Discovery & Synthesis


Dubnium was first created by bombarding americium-243 (Am) with neon-22 (Ne) ions using a heavy-ion cyclotron. The reaction produced two isotopes: Dubnium-260 (half-life >0.01s) and Dubnium-261 (half-life 0.1–0.3s). Later, Lawrence Berkeley Lab (USA) also contributed to its synthesis, though naming disputes led to the eventual IUPAC decision favoring "Dubnium."


Its most stable isotope, Db-268, has a half-life of ~28 hours—remarkably long for transactinides (elements beyond uranium). Other isotopes decay within seconds or milliseconds via alpha emission.


Properties & Challenges


As a superheavy element, dubnium is extremely unstable and not found naturally. Predicted to be a metallic solid, its chemistry remains poorly understood due to limited sample availability. Its electron configuration (6d³7s²) suggests similarities to vanadium (V), niobium (Nb), and tantalum (Ta), but relativistic effects complicate its behavior.
