Hi, everyone. I've got your midweek update from BBC News round. Here's what we've got coming up for you today. Goodies for these turtles in this week's your planet. The dog that didn't stop growing. And we hear your plans for Halloween costumes.
But first today, let's talk dinosaurs. There were huge animals that roam the earth millions of years ago. And now a set of Dinosaur footprints stretching more than 200 meters has been found in a quarry in Oxfordshire in southeast England. BBC science editor Beckham Morale has been to check it out.
The extraordinary discovery has been buried deep under these rocks for 166 million years. But even the most delicate excavations can need something a bit more powerful to get going.
With the rocks cleared, the footprints of giant dinosaurs emerge. This was a Dinosaur superhighway. It's one of the biggest trackway sites in the world.
This trackway is incredibly long, more than 100 footsteps stretching for 220 meters. And if you come down here, you can see how the Dinosaur, as it stepped its foot down, it's squelched up the MUD in the front to create this ridge. So we know it was traveling in this direction. So.
You're literally standing in the footstep of a Dinosaur. You know, we're seeing something and uncovering something that people have never seen before with the first people to see these. And also, it's just a really great experience to work on something in the UK of this size and scale. It's so rare to find something this big where you can get that picture into this past world.
Preserved by a perfect set of conditions. The footprints were made in MUD, baked in the sun, then covered with a layer of sediments. This is our best platform. They were left by sorapod dinosaurs, huge, long necked, four legged.
Plant eating beasts. The footprints have now been analyzed and the Dinosaur that made them be created.
It's not moving particularly fast, two meters per second at the same speed as a human would walk quickly. And so it looks like its pause maybe looked behind it and then kept moving along.
The environment was very different back then. Oxfordshire was covered by a shallow sea, and it wasn't just a time of giants.
We found this little sea urchin. It's got a spine that's broken off, but otherwise it's an almost complete little tiny sea urchin. And that's really important for us because it tells us that these were marine conditions in open seawater before the dinosaurs came and walked here.
It's rare to find a site like this with different trackways criss crossing the quarry. Dinosaurs dominated the earth for millions of years. Even now, we can find echoes of their lost world in the footprints they left behind.
Thank you to Rebecca. How cool was that? Okay, next, some football news as England have secured a place in next year's World Cup after beating a Latvia 5 nil last night. Captain Harry Kane scored twice to bring England's tally up to three before half time. After an earlier goal from Anthony Gordon, then an own goal from Latvia and a final strike from Everetti Ezzie in the 86 minute cemented England's impressive win. The result means they are the first European nation to qualify for next summer's tournament.
Next up, have you got your Halloween costume sorted yet? Well, a local library in the West Midlands is running a costume swap. And we've been asking you online what you think of that idea and what your costume plans are for this Halloween.
Stormy Latte 1,2,3 said, I think costume swaps are great. I agree. But Mando 1,3,8 wrote, I'm gonna buy a Halloween costume new this year because I don't want to repeat the same costume. Paperclip will be sewing and making their costume by hand. All impressive. What you're gonna make someone else is gonna be Audrey from descendants for Halloween this year and they're very excited about it. That is hunter X fan forever. Great name. Hello to Harry Potter level 1. They're gonna be either Wednesday or Hermione from Harry Potter and Jocelina told us I'm gonna be Zoe from K Pop Demon Hunters. Amazing and their friends are going as Mira and roomy. What squad? Okay, now it's a Wednesday, so of course it's time to get the latest environmental news in this week's your planet. Hey, Jenny.
1st this week to what scientists are calling a conservation victory. The green turtle has been rescued from extinction. The creatures. Were once hunted for food and their decorative shells. They had been listed as an endangered species since the 1980s. But now, after years of global efforts, including things like patrolling beaches, releasing hatchlings into the sea and better education about caring for the creatures, populations are growing. Green turtles are one of the largest species of sea turtle, named for the greenish color formed by their plant based diet.
Next, let's head to Mexico to meet eight year old Melly, who loves to talk and teach about these amazing creatures, the axolotl, an aquatic salamander, is an endangered species and is native to the South American country. Meli lives in Sochi, Milco, an area where many axolotls used to live, but sadly, there are now very few left in the wild. Meli keeps axolotls in an aquarium and gives tours to people who want to learn more about them. And she's not the only one hoping to help this species. Farmers here have been involved in projects to improve the water quality in the area in the hope they can repopulate their natural habitat.
Staying in South America, let's go to Brazil to check out this very cool looking immersive experience. It invites people to imagine their own ideal eco future. Visitors go on a multi sensory journey inside each of these three domes with surround sound and interactive storytelling. In one of the domes, an AI powered platform transforms visitors descriptions of the future earth into personalized images, offering each person a vision of their imagined world. The exhibition is designed to encourage people to think more about nature and the well being of the planet and how it could be protected in the future.
I love that. Your planet. Thank you, Jenny. Now, before we go, take a look at this massive dog. Mal, the Alaskan Malamute is 5 years old and weighs 13 stone. That is more than double the size of fully grown dogs of the same breed. His owner, Amy, says his collar is as big as a human's belt. And one of the big challenges has been finding someone to groom his super thick coat. Luckily, with the help of social media, Amy has found a keen groomer to help keep the gentle giant looking his best. He looks so cuddly. I wanna give him a hug. That is all for me today. But as always, head online where you can get involved in our chat, all about what sounds you find really annoying. Have a great day. See you soon.
