Cross-Border Transfer Methods and Arrival Times Explained
Understanding Telegraphic Transfers and Western Union Options
"Transfer speed" and "arrival time" are top priorities for cross-border senders. However, these can vary depending on the transfer channels, methods, amounts, and destinations.
Generally, cross-border transfers can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days. Common methods include telegraphic transfer and rapid services like Western Union.
How long does a telegraphic transfer take?
A telegraphic transfer involves international fund movement through intermediary banks using systems like SWIFT. This method typically takes 3–5 business days, depending on bank processing times and the number of intermediary banks involved.
To complete this type of transfer, the sender must select an international bank, fill in recipient details (name, account number, bank name, SWIFT code), and pay applicable fees.
Western Union: A faster alternative for urgent transfers
For faster and more convenient remittance options, Western Union provides multiple ways to send money to China:
- Online via Western Union website
- Via the Google Play or Apple App Store mobile apps
- In person at Western Union agent locations
- Through digital partner channels
Cash pick up option
If selecting "Cash pick up," the receiver can collect the funds at a local Western Union agent within minutes by presenting identification. The sender only needs to provide the recipient’s name and transfer amount.
Bank account deposit option
For transfers directly into a Chinese bank account, the sender must provide:
- Bank name
- Name as per records
- Mobile number (starting with “1”)
- Bank account or UnionPay card number (starting with “62”)
The first-time receiver must verify personal information before funds are released, but subsequent transfers go smoothly and quickly.
Mobile wallet transfer (WeChat Pay/Alipay)
This option allows money to be sent directly into the receiver’s Alipay or Weixin Pay-linked bank card or digital wallet. The sender needs to provide the recipient's full name, mobile number linked to the wallet, amount, and transaction purpose. Similar to bank transfers, first-time use requires identity verification.
