Typhoon Matmo, the 21st typhoon of the year, made landfall this morning on the Philippine island of Luzon and is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to southern China during the National Day holiday.
Typhoon strengthens as it enters South China Sea
As of 9 p.m. today, Matmo was located over waters northwest of Manila, about 799 kilometers southeast of Shenzhen. It had maximum sustained winds of force 10, or 28 meters per second, with a minimum central pressure of 982 hPa., according to the National Meteorological Center.
The storm is expected to move into the eastern South China Sea Friday night and intensify into a severe typhoon, with peak winds of up to 48 meters per second.
Forecasters project landfall between Dianbai in Guangdong and Wanning in Hainan during the day Sunday, before weakening inland.
Heavy rain and strong winds for Shenzhen
Shenzhen will begin to feel the storm’s impact tomorrow night. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast, accompanied by short bursts of strong winds reaching force 7 to 8. From tomorrow night through Sunday, rainfall will intensify with frequent showers and local downpours. Easterly to southeasterly winds may reach force 6 to 7 on land, while gusts along the coast and in highland areas could hit force 8 to 10.
Authorities have advised residents and visitors to avoid seaside activities, ferry travel, and mountain hikes during this period due to heightened safety risks. Conditions are expected to improve from Oct. 6, with skies gradually turning partly cloudy.
Guangdong holiday forecast
Across Guangdong, most areas will remain sunny to partly cloudy through tomorrow afternoon under the influence of a subtropical high. Hotter weather is expected tomorrow as subsiding air from the typhoon expands high-temperature zones.
From tomorrow night to Sunday night, Matmo is expected to bring severe wind and rain to coastal areas west of the Pearl River estuary and nearby seas.
Weather is forecast to improve across the province from Oct. 6 to 8, with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers in some areas.
