The Companies Section of Cyprus is responsible for registering and protecting intellectual property rights such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.

Cyprus is a member of the Madrid System and also a member of the European Union.

Applying for its trademark can be done directly by submitting an application to the Cyprus Companies Registry and Bankruptcy Administration, or by designating Cyprus through the Madrid pathway, or by applying for the trademark to take effect in Cyprus at the European Intellectual Property Office.

Cyprus trademarks support multiple types of applications with a validity period of ten years. Renewal applications can be submitted 12 months before expiration, and each renewal is still valid for ten years.

The procedure for directly applying to the Cyprus Company Registration and Bankruptcy Administration is as follows:

1. Submit an application

Applicants can submit trademark applications through the official website's electronic application system and online system. Foreign applicants need to submit their applications through a representative in Cyprus.

When submitting an application, if priority is requested, priority proof documents and a certified Greek translation of the documents must be submitted.

2. Review

After receiving the application, if the documents meet the requirements, the official will provide a trademark application number and determine the application date.

Subsequently, it enters the substantive examination stage. If there are any issues, relevant notices will be sent, and the applicant needs to respond within 2 months after receiving them.

If the category of the trademark application does not meet the Nice classification, the official will also issue a notice, and the applicant needs to respond and revise the goods or services within 2 months.

If the official rejects the application due to absolute or relative reasons, the applicant needs to respond within 2 months from the date of receiving the rejection notice.

3. Objections

The trademark that has passed the examination will be published in the official gazette, and anyone can raise an objection to the trademark within 3 months from the date of publication.

After receiving the notice of objection, the applicant may negotiate with the objector within 2 months, which can be extended to 6 months.

If the objector and the applicant fail to reach a settlement, the authorities will require the applicant to submit evidence of trademark use, reputation materials, etc. within 2 months and provide a response to the objection.

4. Authorization

If there is no objection during the announcement period or the objection is ultimately revoked or rejected, the trademark is approved for registration with a validity period of ten years.

1. Paper application fee: 141 euros for the first category, 102 euros for each category starting from the second category

2. Electronic application fee: 129 euros for the first category, 94 euros for each category starting from the second category

3. Objection fee: 348 euros
