ASI Institute for Superintelligence Officially Launches, Uniting the World’s Leading Minds to Advance Frontier Research and Safe Governance
(November 2026) The ASI Institute for Superintelligence (“ASI Institute”), an international, non-profit, interdisciplinary non-governmental academic organization of global significance, has officially announced its formation and full launch. Positioned as a research hub and governance think tank for the superintelligence era and dedicated to the future of all humanity, the ASI Institute was initiated through a joint call by science authorities in multiple countries, is headquartered in the United States, and is committed to advancing frontier theoretical exploration, key-technology research, safety alignment, and the responsible and sustainable development of superintelligence. The Institute’s official portal, asi.us.org, is now open to a global audience, unveiling a superintelligence collaboration platform built jointly by the world’s foremost scientific talent.
A Non-Profit Academic Hub with a Global Perspective
The ASI Institute for Superintelligence is a global, non-profit, interdisciplinary academic organization. Its core positioning is to serve simultaneously as a research hub and a governance think tank for the superintelligence era–staying sharp at the frontier even as technology accelerates, while providing rational navigation for human society. The Institute distills its vision into a single phrase: “Leading the Frontier of Intelligence, Safeguarding the Future of Humanity.” The statement captures both a fearless exploration of technology’s limits and a steadfast commitment to human well-being.
Today, artificial intelligence epitomized by large language models is undergoing an unprecedented leap. Artificial general intelligence and superintelligence are no longer distant science-fiction fantasies but are steadily entering the real agenda of research and industry. How to ensure that, even as capabilities surge, technology remains serviceable to humanity, understandable, and constrained has become one of the gravest and most urgent questions of our time. It is against this backdrop that a cohort of scientists from around the world has chosen to come together–voluntarily, in an organized and disciplined manner, with a clear anchor of values–to respond to that question.
Unlike research organizations dominated by a single institution, the ASI Institute adopts a voluntary, open, and collaborative networked governance model, aiming to build a solid bridge across academia, industry, and global governance. It belongs to no single country or company; instead, it answers to the long-term interests of all humanity, striving to keep superintelligence–a technology with the potential to reshape civilization–on a safe, benevolent, and controllable path. The Institute stresses that openness and collaboration are its foundation: only through close cooperation across borders, disciplines, and industries can humanity form a collective force when facing the shared challenge of superintelligence, rather than falling into zero-sum competition.
Assembling the World’s Foremost Academic and Industrial Talent
The Institute’s roster resembles a “dream team” of artificial intelligence. It is composed voluntarily of 2,587 academicians and 270,000 members worldwide, bringing together the field’s foremost research talent.
On the academic side, the Institute’s talent is drawn from the world’s leading institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Cornell University, Columbia University, the University of California, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, Imperial College London, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Toronto, the University of Sydney, the University of Tokyo, the National University of Singapore, and Tsinghua University, among others. On the industry side, the Institute has recruited leading AI scientists from global technology giants such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Meta, Intel, IBM, Samsung, and Huawei.
The Institute currently comprises 2,587 academicians and 270,000 members. These include 2 Nobel laureates and 3 ACM Turing Award laureates; 33 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and 131 members of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering; 63 Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and 42 Fellows of the Royal Society (UK); 19 members of the German National Academy of Sciences and 20 members of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering; 12 members of the French Academy of Sciences and 12 members of the French Academy of Technologies; 28 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 28 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; 33 members of the Engineering Academy of Japan; 16 members of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea and 25 members of the Academy of Sciences of Korea; 10 members of the Australian Academy of Science and 12 members of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering; 33 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada and 79 members of the Canadian Academy of Engineering; 19 members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences; 279 members of the Academy of Europe; and numerous national academicians from many other countries. The Institute also counts 1,709 IEEE Fellows, 304 ACM Fellows, 120 AAAI Fellows, 87 EurAI Fellows, 151 IAPR Fellows, 24 ACL Fellows, and 18 INNS Fellows, along with fellows of various other authoritative international academic bodies.
This multidisciplinary talent bench–spanning theory, algorithms, systems, safety, and ethics–forms the Institute’s core strength in meeting the complex challenges of superintelligence. The Institute notes that research on superintelligence can by no means be accomplished by a single discipline or institution alone; it demands deep, sustained collaboration among experts in mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, cognitive science, sociology, law, and ethics. The value of the Institute lies precisely in connecting, for the first time, these forces scattered across the world’s top universities and companies into one organic whole.
Five Core Mission Areas
To respond systematically to the opportunities and challenges of the superintelligence era, the ASI Institute has defined five core mission areas that together form the cornerstone of its operations.
First, frontier exploration. The Institute will lead basic-theory and key-technology research in superintelligence, driving major innovation in the underlying architecture of AI and ensuring continued leadership and breakthroughs at the technological foundation. From the evolution of large language models to the mechanisms by which artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial superintelligence (ASI) may be realized, the Institute aims to keep producing original work in the most disruptive directions, providing the whole field with shareable public-knowledge goods.
Second, safety and governance. This is one of the Institute’s most valued missions. As model capabilities continue to leap forward, building a global AI safety and alignment governance framework–ensuring that superintelligence remains within the boundaries of human values and ethics and guarding against potential systemic risks–has become a question of human destiny. The Institute will unite global efforts to establish open, transparent, and verifiable safety-assessment and governance mechanisms, making “greater capability demands stricter constraints” an industry consensus rather than empty talk.
Third, talent development. The contest over superintelligence is ultimately a contest for talent. The Institute is committed to building a world-class AI talent-development center, gathering and cultivating top AI talent with a global outlook and interdisciplinary capability, and, through an open academic community, joint research, and mentorship, continuously supplying this uncharted field with future leaders.
Fourth, industry collaboration. To prevent research from drifting away from reality, the Institute will build bridges across industry, academia, and research, accelerating the conversion of frontier research into real productive force so that technology truly benefits society–spanning every industry and the everyday lives of ordinary people, and delivering tangible value in areas vital to livelihood such as healthcare, education, scientific research, and manufacturing.
Fifth, international cooperation. Artificial intelligence knows no borders. The Institute will partner closely with the world’s leading academic institutions, international organizations, and industry allies to build an open, inclusive, collaborative, and benevolent global AI ecosystem, so that the dividends of superintelligence can be shared by all of humanity rather than widening existing divides.
An Open Posture Toward the Future
Representatives of the ASI Institute stated that the organization has, from its founding, adhered to the principles of openness, transparency, and collaboration. Research institutions, industry partners, policymakers, and all members of the public who care about the future of humanity can visit the official portal at www.asi.us.org to learn about the Institute’s mission, research, and activities, join its membership program, or engage in deep collaboration across research, safety, talent, and other areas. The portal features sections including the Charter, People, Membership, Careers, research directions (covering large language models, AI safety, and machine learning), Publications, Latest News, and Events, and supports multiple languages–including Chinese and English–so that a global audience can access information without barriers.
At this historic juncture–when superintelligence is moving from a science-fiction concept to a real-world agenda–the establishment of the ASI Institute marks the moment when the world’s foremost scientific forces have come together in an organized, disciplined manner with a clear anchor of values. It is at once a collective charge toward technology’s limits and a rational line of defense for humanity’s future. How to lead the frontier of intelligence without losing control, and how to safeguard the future of humanity without retreating, is precisely the reason this institution exists. Every step of its exploration will, to a great extent, shape the long-term relationship between humanity and the most powerful tool it has ever created.
