OCTOBER BOOK CLUB:
Five Star Billionaire by Tash Aw (2013)
Sunday November 1, 4pm
RMB 100 members, 200 nonmembers
In Five Star Billionaire, Malaysian author Tash Aw turns the classic immigrant narrative on its head: instead of East-West migration, the novel looks at intra-Asian migration, with Malaysian characters chasing their dreams in the region’s city of hope—Shanghai. Aw, a regular guest at the Shanghai Literary Festival (RIP), knows the city, and wrote much of the novel during a 2010 Shanghai writers residency at the Embankment Building, the locus of much of the action.
From factory girl Phoebe to real estate empire scion Justin, pop star Gary, businesswoman Yinghui, and the shadowy Walter Chao—the novel’s five star billionaire—all bring their dreams and hopes to Shanghai, the shiny symbol of New China, which, like the novel’s characters, is constantly in flux and plays its own fateful role in the lives of its inhabitants.
Available on Kindle.
Hard copies are not available in Shanghai.

DEEP DIVE:
Rue Massenet (Sinan Lu)
Sunday November 8, 10am
RMB 200 members, 300 nonmembers
In the Deep Dive series, we pick a street and go deep, because that’s where all the treasures lie!
This walk delves into delightful, plane tree-lined Rue Massenet (today’s Sinan Lu), named for Romantic era composer Jules Massenet. Beginning on the street’s southern border, by the ghost of a creek, we’ll trace the story of Rue Massenet all the way to the heart of the former French Concession. Along the way, we’ll explore the legends and lore behind the stately mansions and leafy parks, the meandering lanes and historic buildings of justice, worship, underground revolution, and more—so much history, so many stories, in just one Shanghai street.

November 12 is the 160th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen’s birth, and to commemorate the father of the country, the bourgeois revolutionary whose 1911 revolution ended imperial rule, we’ll take a walk through his story in Shanghai: his motivations, his comrades, his great love, his complicated in-laws, and the impact his revolution made, even today.

SHANGHAI ART DECO:
Rue Père Robert to Avenue Joffre, with meandering (Maoming Road to Huaihai Road)
Saturday November 21, 10am
RMB 200 members, 300 nonmembers
Celebrating Art Deco, Shanghai’s signature style, in a walk that takes us from what used to be the countryside and some of the city’s earliest Art Deco confections as we meander through surprisingly unchanged lane life to see grand, sprawling apartments, an Art-Deco-meets-commerce enclave, hidden surprises, Deco skyscrapers, and the incredible tales that lie behind them.
In 2015, Historic Shanghai hosted the World Congress on Art Deco in Shanghai, introducing the world to our Art Deco heritage – now, let us show you some of our favorites!

Red Mandarin Dress by Qiu Xiaolong (2007)
Sunday November 29, 10.30am
RMB 100 members, 200 nonmembers
Shanghainese author Qiu Xiaolong grew up near the Bund in the 1950s-70s, and his protagonist, the poetry-spouting Chief Inspector Chen, has a similar profile. Although Qiu’s murder mysteries are set in modern Shanghai—(though that’s now the Shanghai of 20 years ago) he uses the past to illuminate the present, because, he says, young people today don’t understand the past and its impact on the present. (We couldn’t agree more!)
In Red Mandarin Dress, a serial killer is stalking the young women of Shanghai. His calling card: dressing the women in red qipaos and leaving their bodies in well trafficked locations. With the newspapers screaming about Shanghai's first serial killer, officials anxious for a quick resolution, and the police under pressure from all sides, something has to give.
Chief Inspector Chen is on academic leave, absent from this case--but when the murderer strikes directly at the investigative team itself, Chen must take over the investigation himself, discovering that this, his most dangerous and sensitive case to date, has roots that reach back to the country's tumultuous past.
