II've got some bad news here. China just unlocked "Hell Mode" for some of us.
The Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), under the Ministry of Education, just updated its official overseas degree recognition search database. And this time, 393 institutions across 79 countries and regions have disappeared from the list.
Before you panic, though, let's get one thing straight.
Being removed from the search list does NOT automatically mean your degree is no longer recognizable.
But if you're planning to study overseas, work in China, or use your foreign qualification for official purposes, this is something you should know about.
The 393 institutions were removed from the current search results because no qualifications from those institutions had resulted in a recognition certificate during that five-year period.
In plain English: they didn't have qualifying recognition records within the period covered by the latest update, so they no longer appear in the current search results.
And here's the important bit: the CSCSE says this update does not represent a new judgment on the institutions' qualifications or a change in recognition standards.
So no, this is not an official announcement declaring 393 universities worthless overnight.
Still, don't ignore it.
If you studied overseas or are planning to do so, here's your checklist:
Check your institution. Search the latest CSCSE database rather than relying on an old list or screenshot.
Don't panic if it's missing. Its absence does not automatically mean your degree cannot be recognized.
Verify before making big decisions. If you're choosing a university, check the institution, programme, and relevant recognition requirements before enrolling.
Contact the CSCSE if you're unsure. Ask about your specific circumstances instead of relying on rumours or your colleague's cousin's experience.
I've included the latest list below so you can check whether your institution appears in it.
Good luck, buddies!
