导读:Forget cheap candy from trick-or-treating. You deserve artisanal baked goods

As a kid, you guzzled cheap candy from your trick-or-treat haul. As a grown-up, however, you deserve better. Congrats: you’ve graduated to a more sophisticated sugar rush.

Shanghai’s original bakery run is back by popular demand this Saturday.

After a few delicious detours — including a gelato run in summer and a hot dog run at the start of autumn — Junto Running Club is returning to the gloriously gluttonous concept that started it all.

Organised by our own editor Sammi Sowerby in the name of community spirit, the 7km fun run is taking place this Saturday, October 31st at noon — so think of it as a social brunch with healthy movement thrown in for good measure.

You get to sleep in, work up a sweat, eat your weight in pastries AND enjoy a siesta before your party plans in the evening.

the team

junto: A craft beer bar with ZERO ghosts or hauntings reported in the last year. Proudly female-founded by beer veteran Chloe Law, junto is one of our favourite places for a pint, especially after a hot and sweaty session with junto running club, started by Sean Brady.

HOKA: An American sportswear brand that made its name going against the grain, HOKA has genuine Shanghai ties: the brand chose the city for its first directly operated store in the world in 2021. Take a pair of their shoes for a free spin before circling back to junto.

Chocolate Croissant Crisp

by Pain Chaud 百丘: One of Shanghai’s first proper French artisan bakeries, Pain Chaud boasts a prominent branch at the base of the historic Jing’an Temple. If you love a good Pain au Chocolat, wait till you try the spooky edition of their viral Flat Croissant — its googly eyes are judging your calorie intake, so show it who’s boss.

Kabocha Pumpkin Cake

by Wekuum: A “little Korean living room in Shanghai,” Wekuum throws themed baking parties once in a blue moon. This Saturday, founder Minyeong is paying homage to the Japanese pumpkin aka kabocha. Six whole show-stopping pumpkin cakes will be specially put aside for junto running club to share.

Maple Brown Butter Doughnut

by Sloppy Gin: Recognisable by its bright blue storefront, this beloved bakery is home to Shanghai’s best doughnuts, which are as variable as a farmer’s market’s wares — and that’s a wonderful thing. This seasonal doughnut by head baker Gin marries the natural sweetness of maple syrup with the nutty flavour of browned butter.
