A Super Typhoon’s Sudden Turn Could Bring Heavy Weekend Rain to Shanghai
A super typhoon has strengthened again and changed direction, putting several parts of East Asia on alert — including Shanghai.
According to a report from Knews on October 21, Typhoon Qipi has remained at super typhoon strength for more than 80 hours. After completing an eyewall replacement cycle, it reached its peak intensity at 8 a.m., with maximum winds of 68 metres per second near the centre.
The Forecast Has Shifted
Qipi is expected to approach the east coast of Taiwan around October 24. Forecast models suggest two possible paths after that: it could make a second landfall in Fujian, or turn north-east over the sea towards Japan.
At 5 a.m. on October 21, winds near the typhoon’s centre were still above Force 17.

What Could Happen in Shanghai?
The latest report says Shanghai may see heavy rain this weekend as the typhoon’s circulation and surrounding weather systems develop. The exact impact will depend on the typhoon’s final path.
For people living in Shanghai, the storm is being watched because a change in direction can affect weekend travel, outdoor plans and transport conditions even when the typhoon does not make landfall in the city.
The typhoon’s final route remains uncertain, and weather authorities are continuing to update the forecast.
