Investment in data centres is reshaping air freight demand, with servers, networking equipment and other high-tech products driving growth.
According to Aevean, high-tech air cargo volumes reached 3 million tonnes in January–July 2026, surpassing the 2.8 million tonnes transported for Chinese e-commerce. High-tech shipments grew 22% year on year, compared with 5.8% growth across the global air cargo market — almost four times the pace.
Meanwhile, Chinese e-commerce air freight into key European gateways is contracting sharply. Aevean reports that August volumes fell 70% in Hungary, 61% in France and 53% in Belgium.
These contrasting trends highlight a shift in the market: overall growth masks significant differences between cargo segments and destinations.
For businesses shipping high-tech equipment, planning needs to go beyond the flight itself. Packaging, handling requirements and delivery to the final destination should all align with the project timeline — especially when equipment is needed for a scheduled installation.
