Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to welcome you to The IoD City Chinese New Year celebration.
女士们先生们，我很荣幸地欢迎各位参加英国董事协会(伦敦金融城分会)中国农历新年庆祝活动。
This year marks the transition from Year of the Rat to Year of the Ox, and this symbolic change could not be more timely. The ox is known for its honest and hard-working nature. It embodies strength and determination - forever pushing forward in Chinese folklore as the unsung hero.
今年恰逢中国农历的牛年。从鼠年到牛年的过渡在此时具有别样的象征意义：牛，在中国民间文化中以诚实、勤勉、努力的特质而被人们所熟知。它象征着力量和决心——是不断开拓、进取的无名英雄。
Following a unprecedented year of challenge and difficulty, we have witnessed determination, strength, resilience and resolve on an international scale like never before. The scientists who have worked tirelessly to provide a vaccine against COVID-19, the nurses and doctors who have dealt with COVID-victims on the front-lines in hospitals, and local businesses which have had to pivot, evolve and adapt in order to survive are some of the unsung heroes of this pandemic. Much like the ox, they have remained stoic and an inspiration to us all.
过去一年中的困难和挑战是空前的，而我们也见证了国际社会展现出的前所未有的意志、力量、韧性和决心。科研工作者们不辞辛劳地研制出抗击新冠病毒的疫苗；医生、护士们奋斗在抗疫一线，救治病患；当地企业为了生存，积极地寻求调整、适应和发展。这些人都是这场疫情中的无名英雄。他们用坚韧不拔的意志，“俯首甘为孺子牛”的精神，激励着我们所有人。
The pandemic will not disappear as we enter a New Year. But the strong, dependable, ever-working ox is a symbol of hope and motivation for us all to press ahead and continue in our efforts to rebuild what has been damaged and grow as a community. The pandemic has revealed many illuminating and promising truths about human potential - such as our collective power when working together. As we look ahead to new challenges, such as climate change, it is my hope that we realise that when we are united, anything is possible.
在新的一年里，疫情还将会继续。但强大、可靠、不断工作的“牛”是希望的象征，也是我们所有人向前迈进的动力。我们将继续努力，重建被破坏的一切，并作为一个共同体，携手发展。这场疫情揭示了许多关于人类潜力的、具有启发性和希望的真理——比如，我们在团结协作时迸发的集体力量。当我们展望气候变化等新挑战时，我希望我们也能认识到：只要我们团结一致，一切皆有可能！
There is much to look forward to in the months ahead, and may tonight mark the beginning of a stable trajectory forward. I wish you all a Happy New Year.
