She Put a Train Carriage on Speakerphone for an Hour
Then a passenger told her, “This is a public space, not your living room.”
A long speakerphone call on a train to Shanghai has turned a familiar travel annoyance into a debate about how much noise one passenger can impose on everyone else.
On October 12, a woman reportedly spoke to her partner on speakerphone for more than an hour during a journey from Beijing South Railway Station to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
The train was G735. The incident happened in Car 10 after the train left Jinan West Railway Station, according to the railway department’s later statement.
The passenger seated in front later said the carriage was quiet around lunchtime and that the call could be heard clearly. She said she finally asked the woman to stop using speakerphone.
“This is a public space, not your living room.”
The sentence became the most widely shared line from the argument.
According to the passenger’s account, the woman replied, “What does it have to do with you?” The exchange was filmed by another traveler and later spread online.

What happened after the argument?
The Shanghai Railway Bureau’s Nanjing Passenger Transport Division said train staff found two female passengers arguing during the journey. Staff intervened and mediated the dispute.
After being reminded, the passenger using speakerphone ended the call. The railway department said no further conflict was reported.
China Railway 12306 customer service said passengers can contact train staff if another traveler’s phone use is disturbing them. Staff may ask the passenger to lower the volume or move to the area between carriages to make the call.
The railway department reminded passengers to avoid disturbing others when using electronic devices in carriages and waiting rooms.
