What’s your dream job? Why you chose to be a management accounting tutor?

My dream job would be a Member of Parliament in the UK, and to have a career in politics. Hopefully, one day this dream will come true but for now I am happy being a tutor! When I qualified as an accountant, I did not really find the work particularly rewarding. It was varied, and interesting, but I did not feel challenged. So I decided very early post-qualified to go into teaching. Something which I do not regret.

When do you get your CIMA qualification, do you feel difficult to get it, how you evaluate this qualification?

The CIMA qualification, and studying towards it, was the toughest thing I have ever done. Studying for any professional qualification is exceptionally hard work and requires 100% commitment. Having said that, I very much enjoyed studying and learning new things and, when I did finally finish, I found I really missed studying. I liked the challenge, and the pressure of professional exams. CIMA has proved invaluable to me. I am from a working class background, and having the CIMA qualification has taken me all over the world and exposed me to situations far beyond what I was expecting. I am passionate about education, and I enjoy teaching students and helping them realize their true potential. Education should not be something that only the privileged can access, and I find it exceptional rewarding when students from poorer backgrounds qualify and get to enjoy the benefits that having a professional qualification can bring.

Apart from Britain, you have also taught in Dubai and China, what’s the main difference about delegates from this 3 different cultures? And would you please share with us some interesting thing in your teaching career?

The cultural differences are really interesting. I find my UK students are very good at problem solving, and being able to suggest practical solutions to the challenges the business community face. However, they are certainly not the most academic! Or indeed, the hardest working! On the other hand, my Chinese students are very academically capable, and their hard work is inspiring. However, they sometimes struggle to apply their ideas to real life situations. In that respect, my UK and Chinese students are the opposite of each other! What I have found most interesting though, is that despite huge cultural differences, there is more that unites us than divides us. For example, my Chinese students will laugh at my little jokes in exactly the same way that my UK students do!

Our Chinese delegates speak highly of your course and benefit a lot from it, they are curious about how can you get pre-seen properly analyzed in such a short time as each time it has different industry background?

It does require a lot of hard work! I have been teaching Case Study exams for a long time, so I know what to look for and what the examiners are thinking. I always try to relate the fictitious company to a real-life company, and I find that helps to be able to understand the business (and it’s industry) more.

As you know delegates are always getting anxious when exam date is approaching, do you have any tips for them to be well prepared for exam and be relaxing?

My advice is to approach studying diligently, and not to leave it to the last minute is always the key to success. I used to do three hours each evening – from 6pm until 9pm – and then I would stop and do something completely different. I always gave myself one day off at the weekend too. Preparing for exams is important, but don’t let it take over your life. Make time to see your friends, and to spend time enjoying your hobbies. A well balanced student is always more successful than someone who lets professional exams take over their life!

Now let’s talk about your hobbies, apart from management accounting, what do you like to do at spare time?

I enjoy socializing with my friends, which means I very often go to the disco. My family own a small boat, so I like to get away with them sailing. I find it clears my mind perfectly, and refreshes me in a fairly short space of time. My brother has a 7 year old daughter, so I love spending time with her and taking her on days out.
