Q:I know you have been teaching for over 30 years, such a long time! Are you bored of this now? Why you enjoy being a CIMA tutor?
A:Absolutely not! Every class is different and I meet lots of interesting people around the World with fascinating stories to tell me. Also because I specialize in teaching case study there is a new case to deal with every 3 or 6 months and this gives me a chance to research and learn about a new industry: social media, oil exploration, dairy farming, autonomous vehicle technologies to name a few.
Q:You have been teaching in China for many years, what Chinese delegates impress you most? For personal development what suggestion you would like to give to them?
A:I’m very impressed at how they can spin their pens around their fingers whilst listening to me! No, seriously, what impresses me is the wish of Chinese delegates to understand more about Western ways of business, and also their dedication to passing the exams and putting in the required effort. I am also humbled by the ability of many of the delegates to speak and write English. Also Chinese students have great senses of humor and every class becomes a lot of fun for me and, I hope, them too.
Personal development should be focused on their leadership and people skills. The delegates I meet are generally very technically competent in finance and they get a lot of benefit from hearing about, and taking exams on, the ‘soft skills; that are essential to dealing with their teams, with other stakeholders, and with leading the business. We have a programme especially for senior CFOs and these are the skills they possess that the younger delegates on other programmes will need to master too.
Also one or two delegates could improve their pen-spinning. They do drop them sometimes.
Q:You are very good at E Pillar’s knowledge and this is what Chinese finance professional lack of most comparing with F and P Pillar’s knowledge, it seems E pillar is all about soft skills, are there any books you would recommend for them to help them improve this competency?
A:Yes, I agree. I’m not sure that books can always fill this gap. A lot of it should come from practice and reflection and the services of a good coach or mentor. There are countless numbers of books on leadership, negotiation, assertiveness, influence and so on.
A:The Harvard Business Review ’10 Must Reads on Emotional Intelligence’ is a good start. In fact anything from the ’10 Must Reads’ series is worth reading and the price is very competitive compared to the usual HBR publications. Some people are very keen on Stephen Covey’s ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and sometimes it’s a useful check list to get a leader centered and focused. In my own development I found Steve Peters’ book ‘The Chimp Paradox’ very helpful in understanding my own responses and blockages and developing strategies to get around them. Oddly enough I found it most useful to help delegates who are suffering from stress in exam-taking.
Q:I know you are not only teaching CIMA but also teaching ACCA, how you evaluate this 2 qualifications? And compare with other finance qualifications in the market what’s main advantage you think CIMA has?
A:Actually I’m not teaching ACCA at the moment because the growth of CIMA has been so great that it keeps me busy. The ACCA is a top-tier accounting qualification and anyone who has passed the exams should be rightly very proud of what they have achieved. ACCA does have leadership and management skills in its syllabus but it’s just a single paper at the end of the entire qualification rather than being at the centre of the learning experience as CIMA has it. This means that ACCA seems to pile on the technical knowledge to meet the development needs of accountants working in practice.
Law, taxation, audit, and so on which are not really relevant to accountants in industry. It misses the point that about 70% of accountants work in industry, not public practice. A CIMA member can assure employers that they have studied and passed the whole skill set they will need as finance managers in industry, but ACCA students have to rely on having gained these other skills from their employer or post-qualification study.
I teach CIMA to a lot of ACCA members, and also to American CPAs. They do find these extra skills a challenge and very rewarding to develop but most of them are already developing careers at a senior level outside practice. I often wonder about the rest of the members. Are they buried at junior levels in public practice somewhere? That’s not a very secure place to be.
Q:You are a star tutor in China, so is your donkey. Every year you spent quite a long time teaching around the world, do you miss your family, and did they support your teaching business?
A:You are too kind. I’m not sure my wife and children would agree. I think they miss the donkey more then they miss me. He even comes on family holidays!
I am way for about 5 weeks in every 3 months, and the rest of the time I am at home. So I see more of them than you might think.
Yes, I do miss them but we have four children of whom three are already away from home and getting on with their lives. We are a close family and they always come to see me as soon as I get back from my travels. And we have a family ‘WhatsApp’ group, a bit like ‘WeChat’ and there are about 50 posts a day on that from the six of us so I know what’s happening.
Q:When you are not teaching, what you like to do at spare time?
A:When I am away I like to explore the cities I visit in the evenings or the spaces between courses. And I read a lot too. But I also have a portable travel guitar which I bring on longer trips to relax by playing.
My leisure hobbies are a bit risky really. Skiing in the winter months and motorcycle touring in the summer. I have a BMW RS1200 Adventure bike which I ride in Europe, and I hire Harley Davidson’s in the USA. I would like to ride around China and I will do so one day. But people warn me that the driving in countryside can be a bit unexpected.
