Infineon Puts US$1.44B into Thailand: Car Chips Are Moving to Southeast Asia

On October 1, Infineon's plant in Thailand comes online. I read this one through and saved it straight away — what it signals is not just another German factory, but that localization of the chip business has finally been taken seriously. Why I am so sure is plain once you read on.

The figures first. 48 billion baht (about US$1.44 billion), spanning power module production, semiconductor test, and a R&D centre. More than 5,000 local Thai employees expected. The products are plain: power modules for electric vehicles, energy systems and data centres.

What stopped me were the next three numbers. Infineon will train over 600 Thai technicians and send 130-plus of its own staff abroad for specialist courses; at least 2.8 billion baht is earmarked for R&D; and at least 14 local Thai suppliers are being nurtured, with local sourcing targeted at 60 per cent.

This is the third such plant, after Germany and China. In other words, the core power module line is now running in a third location, outside its two home bases.

When most people read "a chip plant", the first reaction is "another capacity move". I do not agree with that reading. Moving capacity is about cost; nurturing 14 local suppliers and lifting sourcing to 60 per cent is about the whole industry — this is building a supply chain in Thailand, not a production line.

Why Thailand? I had to look around a bit before it clicked. Three things stack up: Thailand has long been one of the world's main finished-car export countries, so the whole assembly chain next door is ready — the chip plant sits right beside its customers. Its semiconductor strategy is in writing: at least 500 billion baht in five years, 2.5 trillion by 2050, policy actively pulling. And its power and port infrastructure is steadier than Vietnam's today. Drop any one of the three and this would not have landed so cleanly.

Thailand is pushing this itself. It has put semiconductors into its national strategy, and this Infineon deal is another block placed on that track. For someone in the car-export business, the signal is clear — Southeast Asia is no longer just an end-market for finished cars; it is starting to hold on to the upstream.

One blunt note for the export crowd: do not just stare at shipping cars over. The invisible parts — chips, power modules, controls — are what decide whether you can actually take root locally. Infineon's move is, in effect, proof-testing the bar for "making chips on the spot" across Southeast Asia.

My bet in writing: I expect one or two more automotive-chip or power-device plants to land in Thailand next year. Where I could be wrong: 60 per cent local sourcing is a target, not a promise, and whether Thailand's semiconductor talent pool can keep pace is something to watch in practice, not in the press release.

Forward this to whoever is watching Southeast Asia and the supply chain — this thread is probably useful to them.

Have you put an upstream plant or channel down in Southeast Asia? Tell us in the comments — is it actually rooted, or still floating?
