Chapter 3
Historical Comparison: Japan and Korea’s Slow Climb vs China’s Rapid Acceleration
The globalization paths of Japan and South Korea have long been viewed as the classic reference models for latecomers in the automotive industry.
But looking back today, one major difference becomes increasingly obvious:
Japan and Korea achieved globalization through decades of gradual progress.
China, however, is experiencing an unprecedented acceleration.
1. Japan and Korea’s Gradual Globalization
Japan’s automotive industry began exporting as early as the 1950s.
But its true large-scale globalization only accelerated after the oil crises of the 1970s.
At that time, American consumers started reconsidering the drawbacks of large-displacement, fuel-hungry vehicles.
Japanese automakers seized that opportunity.
Toyota, Honda and Nissan entered Western markets with cars that were fuel-efficient, durable and reliable.
In 1970, Toyota’s market share in the United States was only around 1%.
By 1975, Toyota had already become America’s largest imported car brand.
Then Japanese automakers entered a second stage:
Localized manufacturing.
In 1984, Toyota and General Motors jointly established the NUMMI plant, bringing the Toyota Production System into the United States.
This not only reshaped American manufacturing, but also helped Japanese cars gradually shed the image of “cheap imports.”
By 2007, Toyota’s U.S. market share reached 16.3%, surpassing Ford and becoming America’s second-largest automaker.
From the oil crisis breakthrough to becoming part of the American mainstream market, Japanese automakers spent nearly 30 years.
South Korea’s globalization journey was even more difficult.
In 1986, Hyundai entered the U.S. market with the Excel, selling around 170,000 units in its first year.
However, early quality issues quickly gave Korean cars a reputation for being “cheap and low quality.”
To rebuild trust, Hyundai launched its groundbreaking “10-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty” in 2002.
At the time, this far exceeded the industry standard of roughly “3 years / 36,000 miles” offered by American automakers.
Hyundai essentially used warranty policy as a tool to rebuild market confidence.
At the same time, Hyundai Mobis accelerated modular parts development to improve overall vehicle quality.
By 2004, the Hyundai Sonata ranked first in J.D. Power’s U.S. initial quality survey among midsize sedans.
That marked the first time Korean cars truly entered the “quality brand” category.
From entering the U.S. market in 1986 to gaining mainstream quality recognition in 2004, Korean automakers spent around 18 years.
The experiences of Japan and Korea show that automotive globalization is never achieved overnight.
Japan spent 30 years.
South Korea spent 18 years.
Both went through long periods of quality improvement, brand rebuilding and localization.
2. China’s Leapfrog Rise
Compared with Japan and Korea, China’s globalization speed has been dramatically faster.
And the pace is astonishing.
In the past, Chinese vehicles mainly relied on low-price exports.
Today, Chinese automakers are entering mainstream global markets.
BYD’s annual sales exceeded 4.6 million units in 2025, while its Southeast Asian market share continued rising.
In Europe, the MG4 EV has already become one of the best-selling Chinese electric vehicles.
At the same time, Chinese battery makers, autonomous driving companies and chip suppliers are globalizing together.
More and more Chinese supply chain companies are flowing into global manufacturing hubs and emerging markets.
Most importantly, Chinese automakers and suppliers are forming a level of synergy rarely seen before.
For example, BYD’s Thailand factory uses a “core battery cell import + local assembly” model, allowing it to satisfy local origin requirements while reducing overall vehicle costs by more than 15%.
Meanwhile, MG4 EV leverages localized battery supply from CATL and BYD in Europe, further lowering logistics costs.
Combined with local EV subsidies, its overall cost can be 10%-12% lower than Japanese and Korean competitors.
Japan and Korea spent decades achieving their market, quality and brand transformation.
China, however, is accomplishing a similar leap within less than a decade through the rise of electrification and intelligent vehicles.
This is not merely about sales growth or market share.
It means Chinese automakers are evolving from latecomers into shapers of the global automotive landscape.
3. China’s New Generation Is Entering the World with Confidence
Japanese and Korean automakers once globalized with the mindset of “catching up with the West.”
Chinese automakers today think very differently.
They grew up in the era of electrification and intelligent mobility.
Their starting point is already at the frontier of the global market.
China possesses the world’s most complex intelligent driving scenarios, the largest EV market and the most extensive charging infrastructure network.
This environment naturally gave Chinese automakers a world-leading testing ground.
As a result, Chinese automakers are no longer entering global markets with admiration.
They are entering with confidence and equality.
For example, Leapmotor’s partnership with Stellantis is no longer a one-way dependency.
It is a complementary relationship between technology and distribution.
BYD’s factories in Thailand and Brazil are not traditional CKD assembly operations.
They are direct exports of a full industrial ecosystem.
CATL’s cooperation with Ford has also evolved beyond simple supplier relationships into collaboration at the technology and standards level.
This means Chinese companies are beginning to participate in shaping global industry rules.
4. China’s New Generation of Engineers
Another key factor behind this transformation is China’s massive engineering talent pool.
China graduates more than 11 million university students every year, with a huge proportion coming from science and engineering backgrounds.
More young engineers now possess international education or exchange experience, enabling them to work naturally within global teams.
Their thinking is more digital, intelligent and globally oriented.
For this new generation:
Globalization is no longer an aspiration.
It is simply part of their career path.
They are no longer satisfied with learning from others.
They want to participate directly in global competition, innovation and rule-making.
It is increasingly clear that China’s automotive globalization is no longer an isolated corporate decision.
It is the inevitable result of market dynamics, industrial competition, historical evolution and a new generation’s mindset.
And after answering the question of “Why go global?”, the next major question becomes:
Where should Chinese automakers go next?
And how can they truly take root in global markets?
