The Mexico Edition
The ongoing FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico has once again placed Mexico in the global spotlight. As one of the host countries, Mexico is not only the second-largest economy in Latin America, but also one of China’s most important trading partners in the region, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 100 billion. At the same time, more than 80% of Mexico’s exports are directed to the United States, deeply embedding the country into the North American supply chain. In this structure, Mexico is not a traditional “marine resource economy,” but rather an export-driven manufacturing nation powered by maritime logistics. Its maritime economy is fundamentally a strategic channel connecting global supply chains.
Mexico’s economic structure is fundamentally driven by manufacturing and outward-oriented trade. Manufacturing accounts for over 30% of GDP, with automobiles, electronics, and machinery as core export sectors. This system is highly dependent on port infrastructure and maritime logistics, closely linking North American markets with Asian manufacturing networks. From a global division-of-labor perspective, Mexico is best understood as a “maritime manufacturing nation” that integrates into global value chains through ports, rather than relying on domestic resource extraction. Therefore, its maritime economy is not centered on fisheries or resource exploitation, but on the integrated export capacity formed by ports, shipping, and manufacturing.
Mexico is currently undergoing a systematic upgrade of its port system, aiming to transform itself from the “backyard of U.S. manufacturing” into a global supply chain hub. Manzanillo Port, the country’s largest container port, is undergoing a major expansion exceeding USD 3 billion, with the goal of reaching approximately 10 million TEU capacity by 2030. This positions it as a key gateway linking Asia and North America.
At the same time, Mexico’s ports system is being modernized in parallel, with strong integration between ports, railways, and industrial zones, forming a unified “port–industry–logistics” system. On top of this, the Interoceanic Corridor project further connects the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico, creating an alternative transoceanic logistics route. This signals Mexico’s transformation from a single-coast country into a cross-ocean logistics hub.
Against this structural transformation, Mexico’s maritime economy is being driven by three converging growth engines.
First is the nearshoring trend, as U.S. manufacturing shifts to Mexico, particularly in automotive, electronics, and medical devices, significantly increasing port throughput and cross-border logistics demand.
Second is the evolution of ports into logistics–industrial hybrid platforms, expanding from transport nodes into bonded processing zones, distribution centers, and manufacturing gateways.
Third is the steady growth of coastal tourism and consumption economies, with the Caribbean and Pacific coastal regions forming global tourism and cruise destinations, creating a second growth curve for the maritime economy.
For Mexico, the 2026 World Cup is not only a sporting event but also a global exposure window for its coastal economic system. The event will accelerate infrastructure upgrades in coastal cities, including airports, ports, and urban transport systems. It will also attract massive inflows of North American tourists and global media attention, positioning Mexico’s coastline as a national showcase.
More importantly, it will activate related industries such as hospitality, cold-chain logistics, retail, and cross-border e-commerce. The underlying mechanism follows a clear chain: sports event → city branding → infrastructure acceleration → expansion of port-driven logistics systems. In this sense, the World Cup serves as a catalyst that rapidly amplifies Mexico’s ongoing maritime economic transformation.
For China, this trend opens new opportunities for cooperation. The China Marine Economy Expo serves as a key international platform for port economy, green shipping, marine technology, and blue finance. Mexico has strong potential to become an important partner in this ecosystem, deepening cooperation in ports, shipping, and manufacturing integration.
