Oct 12 – 18 Weekly Shipping Market Update

Oct 12 – 18 Weekly Shipping Market Update 广东航易通国际物流有限公司
2026-10-12
0
Overview:
The market cooled broadly in the first week after the National Day holiday. Southeast Asia saw widespread rate reductions and visibly eased space, though Singapore remains tight due to gap sailings. US & Canada lanes stayed firm on the back of concentrated Black Friday tail-end shipments, with space tight and rates fluctuating at high levels — the tight balance of peak-season tail end continues. Europe & Mediterranean: alliances push for increases in late October, but whether they hold remains to be tested, and off-hook rolling risk needs watching. Australia & New Zealand: rates eased from pre-holiday levels, with ample space on the Australia East Coast through late October. Middle East & Red Sea: carriers lean toward pushing rates, but given actual volumes, rollovers are the more likely scenario. Our advice: lock space early on US & Canada lanes — no last-minute bookings; allow buffer time for IPI cargo; arrange Europe & Mediterranean bookings early to avoid rolling. Full regional breakdown below.

🌏 Southeast Asia: rates ease across the board, space notably improved

Thailand:

Rates moved down overall with a quiet post-holiday market and clearly eased space. From Shanghai, prioritize SITC (ample sailing options); from Ningbo, consider NOS (stable space guarantee, longer free time at destination).

Vietnam:

MSK and CNC continue to offer the most competitive rates on Ho Chi Minh and Hai Phong. For large-volume cargo, NOS or SITC are viable options. RCL launches its Ho Chi Minh service on November 6 (vessel NBOS QIN 2621S), with a 5-day direct transit calling at Terminal 2 — rate levels worth monitoring going forward.

Indonesia:

Rates dropped considerably as carriers actively solicit cargo. Space has eased at Jakarta and Surabaya, but Semarang remains tight — book well in advance.

Philippines:

Rates eased and space improved. For remote inland points, prioritize SITC (best value, ample space, reliable schedules).

Singapore & Malaysia:
Space is loose and rates have responded with declines. From Shanghai, lock space via UWS for the best value; from Ningbo for Port Klang West Port, watch COSCO and EMC for space guarantees and SCL for low rates. Singapore remains tight due to gap sailings.

💡 Our advice: Take advantage of the rate-correction window and book selectively; pick carriers by port of loading on Thailand lanes; book early where space is still tight (Singapore).

🇺🇸 US : rates hold firm at elevated levels, tight balance persists

Concentrated Black Friday tail-end shipments kept Ningbo US-lane space tight and rates fluctuating at high levels, with levels expected to hold through late October.

US West Coast:

Spot space is tight as carriers manage capacity; short-term overbookings and minor rolling remain possible. Rates have pulled back slightly but remain firm at the bottom, with high premiums for urgent cargo and greater stability on contract space. Terminal waiting is normal; pressure is concentrated on IPI inland rail — container shortages and delays.

US East Coast:

Panama Canal transit restrictions persist, extending transit times by 5–7 days; schedules are unstable with frequent blank sailings and surcharge pressure. Significant volumes are diverting to USWC IPI, further squeezing space. Canada: direct calls to base ports are workable, but inland transshipment space is tight with volatile transit times.

📌 Outlook: The next two weeks remain a tight balance at the tail end of peak season. No cliff-edge drop in volumes; carriers will manage capacity to defend rates, with easing only gradually toward late October.

💡 Our advice:Lock space early — no last-minute bookings. Allow buffer time for IPI cargo. For urgent USEC shipments, prioritize the USWC-then-inland routing to hedge against schedule instability.

🇪🇺 Europe & Mediterranean: late-October push meets uncertain take-up

Europe:

Alliances push for increases in late October, with some carriers already publishing higher levels — but take-up remains to be tested and a modest pullback is expected. Ample sailing choices and space in late October, with promotional spot space at selected ports; however, off-hook rolling risk is elevated — arrange bookings early.

West Med:

MSC merges two sailings in mid-October; free time at base ports is capped at 10 days. On the PA Alliance MS2 service, YML is overbooked, while ONE still has some spot space; MSK is already quoting from Week 43; HMM's FIM service has two blank sailings with the next vessel in late October; the Ocean Alliance has one blank sailing in mid-month. EMC's increase for late October has been announced; OOCL rates can be checked on its official website.

East Med:

The PA Alliance was overbooked through the first half of October; YML's increase for late October is out. HMM prioritizes light cargo, ONE space is tight, while MSK and HPL offer ample space for new Week-43 bookings — book ahead. WHL's direct Alexandria service is scheduled through late October — book early.

💡 Our advice: The increase is yet to be tested — consider locking current spot levels; book ahead on overbooked West/East Med lanes and watch the merger and blank-sailing dates.

🇦🇺 Australia & New Zealand: rates eased, ample space on East Coast

Rates in late October are down from pre-holiday levels, and space on the Australia East Coast is currently ample.

From Shanghai, prioritize MSK low-cost space; from Ningbo, watch YML's large vessel at end of month.

West Coast Australia, South Pacific and North Australia remain tight — book two weeks ahead

💡 Our advice: Book selectively on the East Coast; book two weeks ahead for West Australia, South Pacific and North Australia.

🔶Middle East & Red Sea: increase attempts unlikely to hold — rates likely rolled over

Middle East:

Recommended carriers for mid-to-late October bookings: ESL / MSC / COSCO / CUL. Carriers lean toward increases, but the outcome hinges on actual volumes — rollover is the more likely scenario. Negotiable for confirmed bookings, with possible rate surprises. Space guarantees require booking-by-booking discussion; monitor terminal releases and vessel loading closely.

Red Sea:

Direct-service recommendations for October: HPL / CMA / WHL / PIL / COSCO; transshipment: CUL / ESL. Market inquiries remain limited, leaving little momentum for increases — rates are expected to hold or drift lower. Vessel switches, port omissions and container shortages remain widespread; follow carrier instructions accordingly.

⚠️ Given geopolitical developments in the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf, allow sufficient transit-time and freight-cost buffer for all shipments.

💡 Our advice: Confirmed bookings are negotiable with possible rate surprises; space guarantees are handled booking by booking — monitor terminal releases and loading status.
