 In 1951, Joan Robinson, an economist at the University of Cambridge in the UK who shared Jack's interests, encouraged him to engage more with China and promote bilateral trade. So Jack had several contacts with Ji Chaoding, the then Secretary General of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

 In 1952, Jack attended an international economic conference held in Moscow. Outside of the conference agenda, he had a separate meeting with the Chinese delegation, hoping to establish the London Export Company in the UK to help restart agricultural trade with China in the UK and even Europe.
